NAMM - Apple Missing in Action

NAMM - Apple Missing in Action

2008-01-19 by GAmoore@aol.com

Although Apple had a huge area at the NAMM show last year, and plenty of
sessions on Logic, it was amazed to see they were essentially not there at all
this year. Apple is listed, but when I tracked down the room, its an upstairs
backroom with a locked door saying that private meetings were going on. Bizarre.

I did see or talk to the developers of the Access Virus, Melodyne, Altiverb,
DSPquatro, Masterwriter, PSP, Chickensystems, Redmatica, etc.

What was odd was that MacWorld was exactly the same time as NAMM this year - which has
never been the case before. That being the case, it makes sense that Apple wouldn't have
chosen to be at NAMM since there weren't any specifically music-related updates and they
chose to be up in S.F.

And....Apple was represented at the Apogee booth, but didn't really have any machines there.
And as you say, they did have meetings on the 2nd floor.

They had nothing left to announce, since everything was released in the last
few weeks.

There literally thousands of companies present at NAMM and I would guess very
few of them actually something new to announce. This is one of the most major
music product shows of the entire world - with plenty of European and Asian
companies coming long distances to be there. The only company I can think of
that was not there was Apple. Does Neumann have new mics? or Waves new plugs? or
Cakewalk new features? There are plenty of little companies selling cables,
guitar strings, titanium guitar bridges, music magazines, etc with nothing new
at all.

What was the big announcement last year? Apogee compatibility? The actual
Apple booth barely mentioned that. There were training sessions each day run
almost continuously, plenty of computers and hands on stuff, etc - Just like there
was yesteday for many other products. This suggests that Logic is an
afterthought for Apple, now that they are "giving it away" for $500 with fairly few
new features.

In addition to seeing Everclear play live in Taylor's room, I saw the famous
bass player Victor Wooten playing from a few feet away.
