Control Surface ... who uses what? good/bad?

Control Surface ... who uses what? good/bad?

2007-03-07 by pete_buchwald

Hey Guys,

I'm looking into buying a control surface for logic. Anybody have stuff they recommend or
don't? I try to avoid Behringer as a general rule, but since a control surface is a glorified usb
mouse I'm tempted to test drive one?

I typed up a list of all compatible controllers for Logic, I'll post it in the Files area when I
get home to my own computer.

Thanks for any direction on this one.

     Pete

I really like my tascam fw-1884 ; it's an integrated control surface / IO
board. It's realatively cheap, and you can have additional faders, and
turn it into a standalone mixer with a button push. The only major
liability is there's no LED's on the sliders, so you have to kind of guess
what the assignments are.

While I've not used a broad range of different controllers I do own
and love my Mackie Control Universal + Mackie Control XT. It was
designed in collaboration with Michael Hadyn, Apple/ Emagic's main
man who designed the control surface code within Logic itself.
Because of this fact I suspect this line of controllers is a strong
cantidate for first place in the seamless integration stakes.

Whichever you choose be very sure about native support within Logic.
Also to extend the functionality of many controllers check out the
excellent LC Xmu <www.opuslocus.com> which does Mackie control
emulation so Logic thinks you're using a Mackie control when you
might be using another control surface. It's an extremely useful add
on for this sort of stuff.

Kind regards

The Mackie Universal Control is SO worth the money if you can swing it.
It works flawlessly with Logic and also works very well with Ableton
Live, Reason, MOTU CueMix and a host of other programs.

A cheap AND easy interface I use is the NOVATION SL REMOTE [ http://
www.novationmusic.com/ ] It not only has Logic control [limited but useful] it also has
automatic sensing of which plug-ins you open and reconfigures itself to control that
particular screen while it's open.

Close and open another plug-in and it auto senses it, re-configures and you're ready to
go. It has pages of controls and you can custom configure to your hearts delight. It also
has 2 led displays for tons of parameters. Knobs, faders and trigger pads as well !

Currently it has "limited" support for logic. Basic faders, eq's and stuff like that. It doesn't
config for stuff like Logic's drum machine, etc.. but they are constantly updating the
software for it. It's not a "static" software device. It comes in various octave choices and is
usb powered as well.

Hey... any Logic Group Users going to Winter Music Conference ? I'm on a few panels [one
with George Clinton.. I'm psyched ! ]
