Key-Switching

Key-Switching

2007-03-04 by Gregory Anderson

Hey, has anyone mastered the key-switching on the Rare Instruments
package so many of us bought last week? I had never heard of key-
switching before but assumed that if you hit a certain key, all
subsequent notes are with a different articulation. I think that has
been working for me, but once switched, I can't get back the original
articulations. I assumed that hitting the other note listed in the
file name would switch back, but no luck. So now I don't know if
doing the initial switch intentionally or randomly.

Would anyone mind a little primer here?

Thanks,

Gregory

I'm not sure about the key switching but they are good sounding samples. The
one thing that seemed funny was the Taiko drums, where there are a number of
different patches, each which only plays on one key.

What's your problem? Works fine. The idea: Low keys(normally so low
they aren't on your typical 5-octave MIDI leyboard) switch between
programs. Transpose your KB one or two ocatevs down(watch the MIDI in
field in the transport bar), now you will be able to switch and play
the switched programs in the octaves above the switch zone.

I've only got a short keyboard, is there any way to assign the key switching to some other
control signal to have access to this fetyure in a "live" performance?

I would assume you could put together some objects in the environment
to convert any specific controller to play the key-switching note.
If you have a drum pad on your controller, you could just assign the
note value to that pad without even delving into the envronment.

I don't know what I was doing wrong. Apparently I did have the idea
right. Maybe I wasn't tuning in to the subtle differences in some of
the instruments. But I tried it again last night, and can
definitely tell the difference. I know I'm late to the keyswitching
game, but I like it. it's a pretty user-friendly technique for
handling a range of articulations for different patches. Just a
warning to others who may not be familiar with this, Rare Instruments
uses C4 for middle C, while Logic uses C3.

You must be referring to the RA version, which is its own virtual
instrument and far bigger. We did, however, get the whole rare
instruments set (16 instruments) that is still selling for $450+ in
places:

http://www.eastwestsamples.com/details.php?cd_index=698

Oddly enough there is a Prosamples version as well, which is $45 and
includes 10 of the 16 instruments we got.

Rare-Ethnic-Instruments-CDROM?sku=955829

Apparently, until this full set got so heavily discounted, the Rag
Dung, Thai Gong, Sarangi, Gadulka, Launeddas and Uilleann Pipes were
worth an extra $400.
