Noise and skips on bounces and system overload....

Noise and skips on bounces and system overload....

2004-12-23 by Sarah

I tried posting this message on the logic user group, but without success.
I recently upgraded from Logic Gold 6 to Logic Pro 7. As I play an arrangement,
occasional noise wil occur. This does not only happen at one specific time/place in my
arrangement, (it is not feeding nor is there a too high signal) and as I go back to the part
with the noise, it might repeat itself and then suddenly disappear !? :(( It is not my
speakers, mixer or amp as I have disconnected those and listened through my EMI
soundcard AND the internal soundcard). The noisy parts and skips still occur with both
audiocards. Also when I bounce both offline and in realtime my bounced file skips at
certain parts and comes out with noise at other times. I can only bounce in LP7, a warning
appears when trying to bounce i Logic 6.3.1. ("Warning: the selected environment objects
have an unknown or illegal format. Please delete and create them again. Exit") It is then
impossible to press exit. The warning keeps appearing, and I have to force quit.
There are no skips when listening to my arrangement in Logic. Only noisy parts.
any ideas as to why ?
And then there are the noisy parts and skips when bouncing in LP7 - does anybody
know why ?

I bounce in AIFF, 16 bit, 44100 (CD-DA), Interleaved, with surround bounce and
dithering off, and I add to both my audio window and Itunes.

My last question is regarding system overload. As I press play, my
arrangement starts, and shortly after, a message pops up indicating that:
"CORE AUDIO: System overload. The audio engine was not able to process all
required data in time (-10011)"
Why is this ?

I use Logic Pro 7 with the newest drivers, my emagic A6/2, a Mac G4 867 Mhz
processor and 1024 RAM, I have three harddisks. One for my system (OSX 10.2.8 and
applications) 80 G, another one only for audiofiles from my audiowindow (150 G) and the
third is for my ESX24 mk II samples (120 G).

Can anybody help as I am getting desperate here....

Thank you.
Sarah...

Its really hard to know what is going on there. I get occasional nasty noise - when using
Digi's drivers before, and even occasionally when using M-Audio's drivers. However,
consdering that you are getting strange errors, I think you need to create a new file from
scratch then import, drag and drop, or copy and paste from your existing song to a new
song, then save that. You might try running the sudo maintence things and the diskutility
repair permissions. those seem to fix some things. You might also see if your electrical
supply is filtered in case a guy down the street is running power tools.

There is a trick you can use. Instead of hitting PLAY, instead hit the space bar for pause
then hit again to Un-pause. For some reason, you can get around some of the disk
overload using this trick. Many times when there is an overload it occurs during the start
up of the track. I think Pause, loads the sounds in a buffer in advance, and then plays from
there.

I get that too and it is one of two real annoyances I have with v7 Pro. The
other being that even though I have song prefs set to send song settings
when the song is loaded, it does not send Reverb, Chorus, or LPF settings -
only patch, volume and pan. I *have* to open the mixer window every time I
open a song and manually choose "Send all Mixer Settings" (or whatever it is
called). That is really annoying and I find it truly amazing that this is
needed with what aught to be a mature product.

I have no idea what is causing it, but I have to ask, with logic being
so new, why is it you're running system 10.2.8?

I'm sorry, I meant to write I use 10.3.5 as Logic Pro only runs with OS 10.3.X.
I got an email saying that the noise is due to a bug in Logic Pro, and that I should set my
audio buffer to 32, relaunch and then set it back to 512 and relaunch. For the time being
this seems to have worked out my noise issues, but Logic still skips during real- and
offline bounces. Does anybody know why ? I can't start my arrangements in Logic 6 as
reviously described, so I'm in big trouble as I soon have to send all of my arrangements to
mix.
Thank you
Sarah

I think you can make any of several changes to the audio driver window to force the relaunch window.

For the time being
this seems to have worked out my noise issues, but Logic still skips during real- and
offline bounces. Does anybody know why ?

L7 is really buggy and unstable in my view. Yesterday I opened a song made with 6.4.3 and strange things started happening ... I would solo a virtual instrument and hear nothing ... but I would hear the other instrument. then the second one wouldn't sound. then individual audio tracks. I opened some of the virtual instrument tracks, and nothing sounded even when I hit a key (but I could see the meter on the instruments moving significantly). Finally the coup de grace ... it just died and I lost my work. An all too common experience with L7.

I saw that Garreth Jones is using 6.4.3 for serious mixing too - which is what I am probably going to do until the release an upgrade to L7

(I'm using 10.3.7)

I guess I must be high. I thought you said 10.2.8 in your original
post.

so, that rules out that problem... :-)

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
