there are a number of controls for Autotune including speed of change and intensity - and there is manual mode with the graphic editor too. I am pretty sure Cher was done autotune, because there have been a raft of immitators using this affect. E.g. Dirty Vegas, and they all seem to have nailed the affect pretty easily.
