This extra compression at the mastering stage is really killing all the dynamic range we have. I have spent many hours to build my mike pres from Seventh Circle Audio, Just to get extra headroom with Jensen Twin Servo designs then I am hesitant to give my recorded CD out to mastering. What is worse is people now expect to hear that. Check these out; http://musicthing.blogspot.com/2005/04/why-records-are-getting-louder.html http://www.mindspring.com/~mrichter/dynamics/dynamics.htm I do not who to blame for this but I do not like it. Maybe not obvious, but what you're missing is that professional productions are put through one or more limiters to maximize the "percepted volume" during mastering. One could argue whether this is really a good thing, but your music will at least sound a lot softer than the rest if you don't. Watch the levels of your mix and those of a commercial one, and you'll see that even though both peak at 0dB, the mastered commercial product stays much higher in level on average. This is why it sounds louder. Maurits. Yahoo! Groups Links
