Hello. Any Australians about? (specificaly toner tranfer stuff)

Hello. Any Australians about? (specificaly toner tranfer stuff)

2005-06-18 by mikegw20

Hello all.

I have just come across this site and thought it best to introduce
myself.

I am playing around with toner transfer and have been put on to "office
works 150gsm matte inkjet paper" for the process. I have been using
10mil traces for SMD work without trouble.

I am looking at laminators and hence the call to Australians is that I
would like to know of any suitable units available here.

I do my pcb layout on autotrax (the non protel one www.autotraxeda.com)
and I can share a few tips and stuff. Also I have taught myself SMD
soldering, I am not great but I can do it, so again the offer for any
advice (given or taken) is there.

Cheers

Mike

I saw some laminators in kmart a few months ago in the stationary section.

I'm in Tassie. Check out Australia Post too. Thy carry small A4 CBC
laminators, one seemingly more substantial for $69.95, a more obviously
plastic version, blue in colour, for $39.95. I'm likely to buy the $69.95
one and see if it can be converted. If not, I can stand that price to keep
it as a laminator.

Part of my reasoning for conducting the experiment is that CBC would be
unlikely to run a varied inventory of parts for its smaller laminators and
therefore there must be a good chance that those for our A4 market share
design features for the North American market? I'll let you know.

Bill

I have the smalish blue one purchased from Aus Post,I don't use it for
circuit boards as I have an old fuser out of a large photcopier i am
modifying for toner transfer. I am willing to pull apart my laminator
and let you know whats inside it if you're interested.

That would be great Phillip, if you wouldn't mind. I guess my principal
question is whether it uses a directly heated roller or some form of heat
pad upstream of the roller. I'm banking on it being directly heated, given
the limited depth of the whole machine. Also, an idea of the ease of
changing the gearing would be useful.
Thanks

Bill, I have taken apart the laminator, it wouldn't be easy to change
the gears around for a different speed as the two rollers have the
same size gears (to make rollers go in opposite directions)the motor
has a smaller gear, the housings on the end of the rollers has no
adjustment but a board would probably squeeze through the middle. Both
rollers have heating elements on them. The fuser i'm going to use for
my boards has a hollow roller with a powerful lamp in the hollow
section for it's heating. i have taken photos but don't know how to
upload them.Teach me to upload the photos and you're welcome to them.

Thanks Phillip, sounds promising on the whole. I dont know how to upload
photos either but if you could email them direct to me I would appreciate
it very much?
