Brother HL-630 printer

Brother HL-630 printer

2004-11-21 by leon_heller

I've just rescued an abandoned Brother HL-630 laser printer left on
the pavement near where I live. It was complete and even had the
printer lead attached.

It had been raining heavily so I took out the drum and toner
cartridge, dried it out, replaced them and switched it on. It won't
feed paper properly so it probably needs a replacement drum, there
isn't much else to go wrong. Some of the toner image gets transferred
onto the paper before it jams, so the toner transfer must be working.

I might try to get it working properly and see if I can turn it into
a photoplotter. Has anyone else experimented with this particular
printer?

My experiance with lasers is that there is often a rubber type pick-
up wheel that wears and eventually needs replacemnt.

I think there is a website on fixing your own printer, but not sure
of the URL.

Thanks. Drying it out some more seems to have got it working. It does need a
new toner cartridge.

Sounds like Yuppies. Toss the printer when it runs out of ink.

Good find !

It's not just for yuppies :-)

For many consumer-level printers, replacing the printer rather than the
toner can be very cost-effective.

A new toner cartridge for my old 300dpi Epson ActionLaser 1500 printer is
$173. I can get a brand-new printer for less or slightly more, depending on
what I want. I've had this printer for around 11 years, and have replaced
the toner only twice.

or a business. aside from rediculously expensive toner cartridges,
when a service call is required, the cost of the call will quickly
outstrip the cost of a new device.

This gets me to a favorite rant about our disposable society and
designers that build products designed to last weeks or months but
I'll save that for another day.

Yep, 'cause then you'll get -me- started.

Remember, there's always Freecycle.org. There may be a group in your area.

[Homebrew_PCBs] flexible shaft for minidrill as spindle

2004-11-23 by Stefan Trethan

Hi all,

has anyone of you the flexible shaft from proxxon?
The webpage says it has 2 BBs in the handpiece, and the good quality
proxxon precision
ground collets.

I must make a drill press with viewing apparatus, and i might not want to
tie up the mini drill itself.
The flexible shaft would provide the precision spindle and collets, while
a simple motor could
easily be fitted to drive the shaft. Maybe the ball bearings in the
handpiece could be tightened
up in some way should there be too much play.

what do you think?

Hi Stephan,
I have the flex shaft and I was planning to use this in my CNC
driller but I have changed my mind about it. 1= it gets VERY hot so
if you are going to use it for longer time drilling you must provide
good cooling for the handpiece. I have not tested to see how warm the
shaft is though. 2=I think the best way to apply the motor/shaft is
haning the motor above your drill press. This flex shaft is very good
but is *limited* to *normal* hobby use and that means short interval
usage, othervise be prepared to buy some extra BB:s as they will wear
due to overheating.

Bengt

ps. havent had time to finish my fuser yet, but soon I hope....

I do not understand why the handpiece should get warm.
It has the same BBs as the minidrill, i don't think it is normal for bbs
to get significantly
warm?

If the shaft itself heats up due to tosion i might just use the headpiece
alone.
I can not machine a spindle in BBs that has low enough runout, at least i
have no idea how
i would do it. I have some nice DC motors from aerospace/mil applications
which i'd like to use as a motor.

What is "significant"? Turning 20,000 RPM or more, if grease-lubricated as
usual, BB's will get hotter'n [deleted]!

That is exactly what I m.....
There is also probably some misalignment also adding heat.

well, in the minidrill itself are bearings too, and they do fine.
Maybe removing the grease and using oil lubrication would work??
