New CNC Project Completed

New CNC Project Completed

2004-07-17 by wwashington2k

I just finished my CNC table which I plan to use to make PCBs. I
have a Dremel tool mounted which I'd like to use to route the PCBs.
Can anyone tell me the best bit to use and recommend a feedrate?
Also, what should the spindle speed be set to (1-10)?

I've created a photo album called ww2k and uploaded a few pictures.
The CNC table is make from scrap metal and roller skate bearings.

Thanks,
ww2k

thinkandtink.com has bits, but be warned, they are kinda pricey at
almost $9.00 each.

they last longer if you can set the depth to just below the copper
and as the copper starts to burr (indicating a dull edge) you can set
the depth deeper and get a little more life from the tool.

My machine has 25,000 RPM as the top speed and uses that for all
drills up to 1/16th.

I don't have the pointed tool speed on this computer, but can let you
know that setting tomarrow.

I got a pack of 20 varied sized carbide re-tips from Harber Freight for something like $5. www.harborfreight.com, item 44924-0VGA. They also have 50 bit grab-bag for 12.99, the 20 bit one is a better buy. Search for "carbide bit". They say "max speed 60,000 RPM"

I got the 50 bit 'deal' and found olny about 5 bits larger than
0.017" and the front row of bits were broken.

I live near a Harbor Freight, so I went in and "choose" (pretended I knew what I was doing). They had 4 or 5 on the peg & I took the first one. It has a pretty good mix, from about 0.125" down to smaller than my - well, you understand. Anyway, i have not used them yet, but they are certainly a better deal than buying them new at Home Despot. If there is not one near you, I can go in and try and find a set that is more what you need. Gives me a good excuse to go in and stare at stuff I have no intention of buying ;).

Thanks for the warning. There's a HF in town, so I'll stop by the
store and see if I can find a good grab bag.

The smallest bit I had in the garage was 1/16". I made a quick g-
code file to drill an eight pin DIP footprint which worked.

Don't think you are going to find these kind of bits at Home Depot,
atleast not any that I have been in. You might find the Dermel bits
but not the same thing, will not last in a FR-4 board. I buy mine
new from Think & Tinker

Hello,

Visit http://www.cnconabudget.com

(I'm not sure why more folks dont use the style of bits the engraving
ndustry has been using for decades... Easy to sharpen, decent life,
cheap price.)

Hope this helps,

Ballendo
