traces HOW wide??

traces HOW wide??

2002-05-03 by marble_h

is there a set thickness when doing a trace is .050 to small or does
it matter. On the board I just did ,I made most at .125 and the
smallest is .050 is that ok I have not finnished the board but I will
post it tonight I still have to but in all the dill holes but let me
know what you guys think of it so far .

John,
Keep the traces that come out of the L298 to the motor
as fat and short as you can. Also the pins that go to the sense
resistors to ground. Also the pin that supplies the plus motor voltage
to the L298. The rest can be thin.

John,
Don't forget the 8 diodes on the output of the L298. Forget
this if you are using a chip with internal diodes.

Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] traces HOW wide??

Depends what process your'e going to use for resist. Using laserprinted
paper sheets ironed onto copperclad I get away with 0.02" spacing and trace
widths........ Photoresist will get you down to maybe 0.01" or better.

The trace-width depends on TWO things: How much CURRENT ("amps") the trace
must conduct, and how SKILLED you are in making a trace. 0.01" is found on
professional PTH boards!

0.05" wide traces are "healthy", and easy to do "manual" work. 0.125" is
quite wide, actually! You could pass three or four amps through a 1/8" wide
trace with no problem. I forget the site, now, where it describes how to
calculate a trace-width based upon current to flow through it. Someone else
remember it?
