PDB teching bits

PDB teching bits

2004-03-18 by Dave Mucha

Hi all,

Still looking for those small etching bits for engraving boards.

T-Tech wants $15.00 a pop for them and it seems there is no one that
sharpens them.

Three questions,

does anybody have a source for cheap etching bits ? These are the 60
deg Vee point engravers.

And, what do you guys pay for them ? I think $15.00 a pop is a
little steep.

Third question is what about a group purchase to get discounts on
costs ? Probably only good for those of us in the U.S.

Damned if I can remember the name but, one of the guys on the
caddamdro list sells home made z-axis spindles (quite nice looking
really). When I was perusing his site I saw he sells those bits AND
sharpens them.

Wish I could remember the name. I'm at work now but I think I might
have a link in my favorites - I'll check when I get home.

Paul of CNC on a budget.

http://www.cnconabudget.com/PaulJonesEngravingCutters.html

$4.00 for a single flute engraver. Seems he re-grinds old bits to
get the point.

Think and Tinker are about $75.00 for 10 bits.

I talked to a guy who makes such things and he says I'd have to get
near 100 to a price close to $6.00 each.

www.CNCOnABudget.com

You get a 'free' re-ground drill bit, ground into an engraving bit,
with each spindle purchase. I have not tried it, but it looks like
you get what you pay for. He also sells reprints of an article about
how to grind engraving bits. I buy my engraving bits from
<http://www.thinktink.com/stack/volumes/voli/store/specs/mechetch.htm>
You won't find them surplus, like you do drill bits. They aren't used
in high volumes like drill bits are.

I can't say enough good about the above spindle, though. I have one
on my Taig mill, and it's what I use for engraving and drilling PCBs.
I don't think it would be good for milling metal, though.
