Fantastic results with cheap sign vinyl as toner transfer medium

Fantastic results with cheap sign vinyl as toner transfer medium

2012-10-10 by brucethehoon

I read this the other day:

http://dangerousprototypes.com/2012/09/29/pcb-manufacture-using-oracal-vinyl-film-laser-printer/

My results were SIGNIFICANTLY better than with the Pulsar paper, and I am getting results identical to my best photo transfers. I am Andrew in the comments.

I link, in the comments, to the specific vinyl I used, but if there is interest in this group, I will re-try the same experiments with vinyl purchased from Amazon that features Prime shipping. I have lots of vinyl laying about, and can likely find some.

Wow!

Many of us have tried using the backing from vinyl and sticker sheets. And I've made some PCBs using the vinyl cut to the pattern. But I don't think anyone tried Laser toner transfer using the vinyl itself!

I"m anxious to try this now. I have a few rolls of vinyl hear, maybe I'll run them through my laminator first at "foil" setting to test, as that is hot enough to melt toner. I don't want to ruin my Laser printer.

Any sense if the vinyl sheet attached to the paper is reuseable?

That's amazing. I've tried toner transfer, and gave up. Couldn't get
reliable transfer.

I have read your posts and have one question. I own a Hewlett  Packard Lasarjet 4 printer. It is 300dpi or 600dpi.
Is this method good at 600dpi or what is best method for my type of printer. I am looking at positive developement
method or pulsar toner method. I have never heard of this vinyl method. Does anyone know the answer for a new person to investigate. Best Kevin

Hobby shops - or rather craft shops that sell scrapbooking stuff will have
it.

You can get in sizes like that for the CriCut machines that have been
mentioned on here a few times.

Some eBay sellers will sell you a page-size sheet for a couple of dollars.

Interesting, I guess any high-gloss vinyl would work. I've got a few
different types so I might try that.

There is a small possibility that the vinyl will melt in your fuser. Years
ago a sales rep showed me some new vinyl stock (for labels), it got as far
as the fuser. Took me ages to clean it out.

good idea - will check them out. anybody tried out the ones specifically for the cricut to see if the fuser melts it?

I believe that the vinyl I tested with is of the same type that the cricut uses, and I used the highest fuser setting and there was no melting of the vinyl, nor any indication that the vinyl had been damaged or partially melted in any way.

It would probably be a real good idea to test it first with a clothes iron
set to linen or cotton first. Much easier to clean up than your fuser.

If you are paranoid put a sheet of thin aluminum foil between the iron and vinyl.
If something melts it will just toss the foil and vinyl.

I am new to this as well as all other types of developement and tried your method with beautiful results.
Method:
1. Hewlett Packard Laserjet 4 600dpi. resolution 3
2. Regular house hold iron set on highest setting.
I  did three boards of .024, .032 & .05 inch size traces and all thee boards came out perfect and the same type of iron on did not with photography paper or pulsar pro paper. No problems going thru and comming out of lasarjet printer either. I just do not know if I really need 1200dpi type printer for the future. Thanks for advise and Help. Best Kevin

Hello Mitch,

I thought that I had convinced you to go photoresist ages ago ... lol.

How's China?

Oh the irony. When you sent that to me, all of three days ago, I was
sitting at home in Box Hill. Now I'm back in China. I've just spent
two months back home, but unfortunately I ran out of time and just
didn't have enough time to visit anyone. Which means I missed out on
visiting you. Sorry!

Regarding Kartman, I only just had time to read his post, so I missed
meeting up with him. But I just replied in 'Freaks.

Indeed you did! After your excellent demonstration at CCHS, I gave it
a go myself, and wrote it up:

http://capnstech.blogspot.com/2011/05/playpause-making-pcbs-at-home.html

I've shown that to many people. I even gave you credit at the end!

Speaking of convincing people, it seems I've been unsuccessful in
convincing you to get your PCBs through me. Sad face! I have many
Australian customers who are enjoying the price and service.

BTW here are pics from a customer of the solder paste stencil I just sent him:

http://www.cusf.co.uk/2012/10/joey-r2-stencils/

Ain't that a shiny thing?

And some more writeups from other customers using my boards:

http://ava.upuaut.net/?p=372

http://hairy.geek.nz/2012/06/more-new-pcbs/

Anyway, should you change your mind, here's everything you need to know:

http://tinyurl.com/hvpcbfaq

I'll be back in mid-Jan, I'm up for meeting then!

Mitch.

I really hate it when mailing lists are set to reply to all when you hit reply:

http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html

Really violates the "Principle of Least Surprise" :-(

Sorry about that folks.

Mitch.

The email came from the list, so the normal [mine, anyway] expectation would be for the reply to go to the list. Perhaps your email program has an issue. To reply to the original poster, cut and paste the OP's email address and delete the list address; no surprise. On some lists, Reply All will include the OP in the CC: line, but that is rare.

Really? I hate it when people respond with solutions privately, then all anyone sees on the list is people with problems and no solutions. I think it is worth the occassional accidental personal reply.

I agree ...

On another note ... my laser printer arrived today ( so says ups) and will try the vinyl on paper transfer soon .... my wife has plenty of vinyl for her silhouette...

Will take it to email.

tried it tonight and i get much better results w/ glossy magazine pages...weird. using canon mf4150 and this laminator - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001JXJ5HQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
went through laminator 10x or so.
maybe i did not let it release long enough in the water? used the same type of vinyl as the dangerous prototypes used.

I assume you have the laminator modified to run at the correct temperature?

I don't know how useful this is outside of Australia, but a friend of
mine write a very nice page on modding laminators to run hotter:

Re: Fantastic results with cheap sign vinyl as toner transfer medium

If you have not modified it I expect it has enough power to heat through the thin magazine paper but not enough to work well with the vinyl.

Since it does work with paper it's probably almost there, if you increased the temperature a bit it would probably work fine.

On this topic of discussion I have a question before I buy a laminator GPC 220 Laminator. What is the best way to measure the temperature of the board after it comes thru the rollers as I will be doing only 8mm
to 9mm thickness size boards.
1. DMM with temperature
2. IR temperature meter
I do iron on with vinyl & cheep clothes iron to success but wish to graduate to laminator in the near future but have no experience in measureing temperatures as a home hobbiest only. Does any one know the facts and answer to this simple question. Thanks Kevin

Finally going to make some headway ...

Does it matter if its coloured -- ok besides black, you would have a hard time seeing the toner .....

Just as long as its Oracal 651 high gloss ?
