Want to attach motor to 1/8" COLLET

2012-09-29 by cb277

Hi,

I want to make a mini drill press using a 10000 RPM motor with a 1/8" shaft to use with 1/8" bits. I have not found a shaft coupling or other parts to do this. Does anyone know where to find this stuff?

What kind of answer is that? Would you like to put a bit more
information in that so we know what you're trying to say?

Are you sugesting that what Chuck needs is a Dremel tool? (You got to
be kidding, the run-out on a Dremel tool is terrible)

Mitch.

You can do a lot better than the Dremel collets, look at the ones that Proxxon sell.

We used a Proxxon tool/collet on our self-made Hackerspace CNC
machine, with very good results. They are much higher precision than
Dremel tools.

It's called "Here's what you need to type into Google. Have fun.". (Much better than responses' that start "I think...")

Google will, of course, bring up the various Dremel-type stuff mentioned.

Hi psykhon,
I think this might help you...

Do a search for Collet Chuck on Ebay... you get like 919 results....

I found a couple that I might look at further because I have been thinking about using a series of brushless motors that belt drive the collet chucks, each having a specific mill or drill in it, mounted on a turntable that mounts into the Z stage of my mill or maybe make a mill specifically for PCB milling only.

I have figured 10 different mill/drill types and have found a workhorse of a motor called the donkey at HobbyKing for a great price. I'm not sure if I'll do separate controllers for each motor or one controller switched between multiple motors?

If you have questions post them or email me off list...

Best Regards,

Kevin I.

Hi psykhon,

I did a little more refining on my search on Ebay try this one...

http://www.ebay.com/sch/sis.html?_nkw=ER20-STRAIGHT-SHANK-COLLET-CHUCK-TOOL-HOLDER-ER-20-

For a 1/8" collet you need the 4mm collet just to save you the time and hassle...

Hi All,

I don't know happened to Ebay but it wigs out with the link below....

just do a search with Google for "straight shank collet chuck" you'll see a search result for Ebay about half way down, that will get you where you need to be...

Also you can search for "straight shank collet chuck" directly on Ebay and get slightly different results.

One seller seems pretty good, yes it's china, but look at the runout... seller name "ctctoolseller"

Later....

Hi Everyone,

Donald, what you do is either with a timing, V, friction belt and pulley's you connect them.

You mount the shank and at the top put a small pulley and then offset mount the motor and put a larger pulley on and then put a belt on the pulley's and you have it.

You don't want to mount the motor directly to the shank because of the vibrations and axial offset you have.

If you really have to stick to your guns about direct mount then I suggest a spider shaft coupler, the rubber center piece of the couple will allow for slight axial deviation and will absorb some vibration.

Any other questions let me know, I'm working on my spray etcher, I finally got my acid pump, stainless steel cartridge heater for the inline acid heater reservoir and have all the parts need so it's gluing, cutting, fitting and screaming time.

Best Regards,

Kevin I.

OK. I can envision a drive to the collet chuck as a separate entity with no problem. For some reason, I was thinking this was about fitting a collet chuck directly to a high speed air or electric motor for PCB milling. And while that can be done, a spider or helical coupling for those speeds would be pretty spendy and the whole assembly would require some careful machine work to be functional.

Thanks,
Donald.

Thanks for your thoughts.

This is where the idea came from. My thought is to mount a motor on the linear slide & use an adapter for the drill bits..

http://www.instructables.com/id/$30-High-Speed-PCB-Drill-Press/?&sort=ACTIVE&limit=40&offset=40

After another 4 hours searching I found out that 5/32" is 4mm. I found a motor... 12000 RPM no load, 6000 RPM @ full load (130 Watts,) rated for continuous duty. It is not round! but has six sides... better for mounting I think..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/flex-collet-coupler-for-4mm-motor-shaft-and-3-18mm-1-8-flex-cable-rc-boat-/140696666271?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20c22cc09f

I think with the motor mounted to the linear slide the axial deviation will be acceptable. Any helpful thoughts?

The other (expensive) idea is the Proxxon MICROMOT Drill Stand MB 140/ S and rotary tool. I found a metal adapter to use a Dremel tool with the Proxxon Drill Stand.. the problem is the company is in Australia & does not ship to the US..

The dremel has an aluminum collet, and has worse runout than the
proxxon, which has a more precise steel collet (with 3 jaws, not 4).

While the proxxon is more expensive, I have both the 12 volt and the
120 volt models and drill consistently with the 120 volt model. The
12 volt model is sufficient, as far as I can tell.

You don't need 130 watts for the motor, and the 20,000 RPM is much
better than the 6000 RPM for carbide drills. The drill stand is a
good one, and I could recommend it over the dremel stand, which is
wobbly.

Remember that you are dealing with a carbide drill in the #70 or so
range, and you'd rather not wobble the drill, those things will break
if you look at them crosseyed.

You also want to make sure that the board is held firmly when
drilling, if it wobbles, you'll find out how fast a carbide bit can
become a router and eat part of the board. Don't ask how I know
this....

JBweld can fix the hole, but if it ate a track.... well....

For some reason, I was thinking this was about fitting a collet chuck directly to a high speed air or electric motor for PCB milling. And while that can be done, a spider or helical coupling for those speeds would be pretty spendy and the whole assembly would require some careful machine work to be functional.

I just ordered from the US the Dremel to Proxxon mount from these guys in Austrailia. http://www.hobbytools.com.au/mount-for-proxxon-drill-press-to-dremel-ryobi-ozito/
I also found the place that would not ship to the US.

They take Paypal. Marked as shipped with a tracking number. I ordered one other item and the postage is under $20. Not unreasonable. Not the first time I've gotten stuff from Australia. I should have bought more.

I don't have the Proxxon drill press yet. I was trying to get an idea of the Proxxon overall dimension of the holder to see if it could be reamed to, I think, 1 inch. A Dremel attachment (router) will provide that adapter Dremel female thread to 1" round. I think the dimension is an inch.

For PCB drilling much higher RPM is desired. The very small die grinders
with 1/8" collet are ideal for the application and if bought on sale I have
seen them for $20.

For more info search the group for "Boman air turbine" or look at message #
#27702.
