Drills and stands

Drills and stands

2012-05-15 by Howard

Hi All
Am having some probs with my drill\stand setup.

The stand is the type with a single slide piller,
it is meant for a 240v work drill (i use a dremel drill )
sometimes the stand will move from side to side and
snap the drill bit !!.

Can anyone suggest a good drill\stand combination, that
will not give me these problems ?

I think that some of you use Proxxon products
any pros\cons ?

Look forward for any comments

Howard

If a program is useful, it will have to be changed.

Hi Zoran
Just had a look at the Proxxon TBM 220
It's top speed is only 8500 rpm, is this speed
any good for tungsten carbide bits ?

I use it all the time. Drilled couple thousand holes 0.7 mm dia.

I built a wooden dremel stand that almost never snaps bits (I've snapped
far more by dropping them, than by drilling):

If you drill a LOT of pcbs, a CNC machine might be a good addition:

Note last photo, and corresponding video:

The CNC uses a 56,000 RPM air grinder with an inline oiler (Grizzly
H8212, $25) which has less runout than a dremel, but you really need to
mount it to something to use it for drilling. You could mount that to a
wooden cantilever like my dremel stand, too.

I use the Proxxon FBS rotary tool (You can also get the IB/E which is even better) in the MB 140/S Stand, after watching this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JyTf1tJXXo

Tool goes to 20,000 RPM so I think it's better for PCBs than the TBM drill press.

Also, with a router bit I can cut my PCB stock with it too.

Broken only one bit so far, because I accidentally moved the board while drilling.

Works for me, but still breaks drill bits sometimes. Important thing is to
have some kind of slippery surface under the board, so board could slide a
bit if drill bit wants to center better in a pad. I am using a piece of
anti-static package from some electronic parts, the shiny one.

tda7000
Are you using the FBS-240E or the 12v version in the
MB140/S ?, am thinking of getting the FBS-240E

Also i note that the stand has a fence across the width of the
base, can the fence be moved to the back of the base to allow
larger pcb to be drilled ?

Do you think that this drill\stand combination is good for
using tungsten carbide bits ?

I have the FBS-240E tool. Never used the 12v one so can't comment on those.

The fence on the base can be moved and even removed. If you need even more space, you could remove the whole base and mount the rest of the stand onto something else from above, leaving nothing in the way underneath. ie: gantry style mounting as in a CNC router.

It seems pretty good for carbide bits. As I said I only broke one so far and that was my own fault. I moved on to those after the cheap HSS ones I first got wore down.

If you're worried about snapping carbide ones easily, you could try titanium coated, but I guess they still wouldn't last as long as carbide.
