Looking for through hole vias

Looking for through hole vias

2011-06-14 by Jim Pruitt

I built a mixed smt and through hole kit on a commercial pc board recently
and installed a header on the wrong side of the board. The board was thru
hole plated. When I tried to unsolder the header with a solder sucker and
then several passes with solder wick I managed to pull the header out but 2
of the vias came with it. The header uses .025" square pins. The old vias
would not go back in the hole or back on the pins.

Does anyone know where I can buy a few vias? I have some larger ones but
are huge compared to the ones I am looking for.

Can anyone point me to a source for a few of the through hole vias?

Thank you.

I'd poke a thin piece of wire through the hole with the pin and make the
missing connections with that.

URL obfuscation? (was Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] Looking for through hole vias)

2011-06-16 by Donald H Locker

I'm curious why one would obfuscate a web page address. Obfuscating email addresses hinders spammers from harvesting email addresses, but owners of commercial web pages usually actively seek exposure. So why try to hide it? I must be missing something.

Looks like <http://www.solder.net/PCB/through_hole_repair_kit.asp> have some very good info.

Thanks,
Donald.

URL obfuscation? (was Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] Looking for through hole vias)

It may be a habit from mailing lists and forums that don't allow URL posting, or a habit from obfuscating email addresses to prevent harvesting.

Hi all,

Actually, I sent the web address twice. The first time was just a copy and
paste from the address bar. I waited a while and couldn't see my message
arriving. I figured (wrongly) that it was discarded as junk mail. So I resent
it again the way you see it now. This was done from work. Again, I didn't see
my email arrive. So I waited to get home to see what I was doing wrong. Both
message were there??? It is not spam mail. I am a regular reader of this post
and have been for a few years. I never post because I don't know enough about
the subjet to put my 2 cents, but I find very interresting information in here.
I am building a CNC and intend ( it may take a long while before it is done) to
cut PCB with it. So I did look for eyelets to use as VIAs a while back. I
should have put more information with the message. Sorry for the confusion, it
was not intentional, I was just trying to help :-) :-)

Have a nice day.

Paul :-) :-)

No confusion. Thanks for the link - it was interesting!

I don't have experience with an exchange medium that prevents sending URLs so hadn't expected that.

I love to learn new stuff. I once got a fortune cookie - "You learn from your mistakes ... You will learn much today." Since then, I try to learn much every day!

Hello Paul.

Yes that was a very educational site. I was going to order 100 of the middle size eyelets but the $15 for shipping was a deal breaker for me since I only needed 3 or 4 eyelets.

Thank you for the link I will keep them in mind and did bookmark them.

I'd poke a thin piece of wire through the hole with the pin and make the
missing connections with that.

You can try these ones:
http://es.farnell.com/cif/bg10-s/ribetes-%C3%B8-1-1mm-cantidad-100/dp/1783594?crosssellid=1783594&crosssell=true&in_merch=true

That site is from Spain, but Farnell also sells in many other countrys. You
can also find it in Newark:
http://www.newark.com/cif/bg10-s/rivets-o-1-1mm-qty-100/dp/63R8443?Ntt=CIF+-+BG10.S

I just purchased few time ago, and havn't tried if it is suitable for under
a chip (tqfp or soic).

These aren't rivets specifically designed for through-hole vias, but they work pretty well. They are 2mm in O.D. silver cylinders, .077" in length sold at Hobby Lobby for jewelry use here in the US. They are OK for the thinner sizes of double-sided boards. They are sold as crimp tubes, under the Westrim Crafts name. A bag of 62 is $1.49. They are very soft (I squished the one I measured with the digital caliper) and accept solder extremely well. A light touch with miniature Phillips screwdrivers applied simultaneously on both ends will flare their ends in the hole, keeping them in place until solder is applied.

I just got back from BEST Inc. Got certified IPC-JSTD and IPC-610 as a trainer so I could cert others. Great company and good stuff.

That is a GREAT idea Ted - I've still got plenty of vias a buddy gave me, but I'll have to check those out.

yes, great idea.

I did a quick search of eBay - you can get these things in 1.1mm 1.3mm
1.5mm 1.8mm as well as 2mm and larger too as well as various lengths and
materials - gold or silver plated or sterling silver. I will have to
spend a bit of time looking through the various and will have to check
with the local arts and craft and jewelry supply for some examples.
