Free PCB question

Free PCB question

2011-02-18 by Randy S.

When I try to connect parts together
I get a popup to ask what NET to add too
and I have to enter a number.

On the demo video on you tube, it shows
the same popup, BUT .. it has a checkbox
to automagically assign it ..

Same versions .. 1.2

Is this a setting or something ?

What am I doing wrong ?
Not liking FreePCB so far .. lol

I suggest you give KiCAD a try - I think you might like it.

Can I freehand a board in Kicad without a schematic?

Randy,

The 1.2 version is just for installation; it establishes the file
structure but the executable is quite out of date. Once you have the
basic installation in place, apply the latest combined update (1.359)
and you'll find thing working as expected. Also, check my "New User
ALERT" post in the Comments and Questions section of the sights forum.

and yes you can manually route a board without a schematic :).

Yes you can. I've done it before for making things like PCB antenna
boards or connector breakout carriers.

gEDA/pcb can do all that also. Now if we could just get our Windows act
together...

I've done it once or twice for a simple breakout board. I would always
do a schematic for anything else, though.

Its a very simple high voltage power supply board ..
can do it my head easy enough ..
Just diodes, bypass caps, glitch and surge resistors.
Thats it ..

I'd create a schematic for that. It'll only take a few minutes and would
prevent a wrong connection on the PCB.

I would but .. sorry for ignorance here .. dont see a schematic editor with

Do I import it form another program?

Free editors I suggested earlier are:
a)
I have briefly tested Suigyodo Schematic
(http://www.suigyodo.com/online/e/index.htm) and it seems to work fine
and is capable of generating compatible netlists including footprint
names to be included in the netlist.

b)
LTspice shematic netlist outputs can be edited to add footprints. See:
http://www.diyhifi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1114
<http://www.diyhifi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1114>
LTspice is a fantastic combined free schematic pgm/SPICE simulator
available from:
So do your schematic and simulations in LTspice, then export the netlist
and make it compatible to FreePCB.

Okay -- no schematic editor, no way to print out directly from the program ... I don't mean to be rude (well, maybe just a little! :)), but why would anyone use FreePCB??

HOW RUDE !! LMAO .. just kiddin
Well .. I will migrate to one of the others as soon as I have time..
I will say one thing about the FreePCB ..
Using that and having to deal with the "nets"
has been instructional .. and when making that board ..
I have some "conflicts" where I couldnt attach a wire
to a pin on a part because it was on a different net .
BUT .. this time .. thanks to everyones patience and
kind assistance .. it made sense and I knew what to do to fix it .
It kind of reminds me of switches and hubs and segments / collision domains.
On the note of OTHER software .. I am playing with KICAD in ubuntu
and created a schematic, but when I click on the PCB button ( forget what its
called and I am at work )
it opens the board editor with a blank sheet ... shouldnt it bring the schematic
info
over into the board layout ? Or is it a manual import type thang ? LOL
I'm thinking it should do what Eagle does when you switch to the board editor.

Thanks again all

Randy - N2CUA

Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] Re: Free PCB question

2011-02-19 by Charles Patton

I guess it boils down to different strokes for different folks. I've
done boards using FreePCB, KiCad, PC Express, Eagle, and early ORCAD.
I just don't do boards very often. So pgms with large learning curves
get a personal negative from me, no matter how good they are. So,
although FreePCB doesn't have a print capability, it does just fine with
its Gerber generation. And isn't it the point of a PCB pgm -- generate
the CAM files, not a printout? I'd much rather have the Gerbers than
the printer function. As the program has been around for awhile, and
the print function has not been implemented, I assume other people
pretty much felt the same way. So:

Eagle -- bad for a large learning curve and crippled to boot - bd size,
number of components and layers. Money to un-cripple.

PC Express -- simple to use, but limited to one board house -- that
makes it hard to get competitive bids and thereby unacceptable to me.

KiCad -- bad for a large learning curve, other than that it seems to be
quite capable.

FreePCB -- Simple to use, as I have said, it's free, it's not crippled,
and I find the ASCII file structure of the data saves rather easy to
understand without any manuals about it. This enables me to use the pgm
as is, or to go into the file structure and tweak items such as add
additional menu items such as different grid spacings. I can go into the
file and with a text editor paste in a multi-thousand point NC file to
get around the rather simple, limited geometry capability. (After all,
it's a simple PCB pgm, not a SolidWorks, or major drafting pgm.) The
lack of direct printing is not a problem, as I always just dump the CAM
files and use GC-Prevue, a less than one minute process. I concede that
the schematic editor is the worst problem, but as I said, there are at
least two ways around that, too. Using the Suigyodo
(http://www.suigyodo.com/online/e/index.htm) schematic editor, I found
I could easily make a simple board. This pgm is in early development,
so a bit rough around the edges, but again, it's simple, a big plus in
my book. I will also admit that I personally use an old version of
Orcad because I have it and I've used it for years, so I don't forget
quite so quickly on it. But if I was starting from scratch, I think I
would probably shy away from it due to some of its complexities.

So in summary, if a person intends to do boards every day to every week
(?), surely something like KiCad would be a good choice -- but if
months or years will go by between boards, I'm not so sure that it is
the best choice and I would lean to the simple FreePCB.

Regards,
Charles R. Patton

Go here for a comparison of free CAD's Eagle, Kicad and Design Spark.

<http://kicad.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Mini_tutorial> is a great place to start. The basic process is eeschema (make a schematic), cvpcb (associate modules to schematic components), import the netlist to PCBnew to make the pcb. Pretty quick and painless. Each step in the process does one thing only and does it very well. Makes no assumptions about what came before or what comes next, just does what you tell it.

It's not like a lot of programs that try to intuit what you are going to do next and get it wrong just enough to completely destroy any advantage that the other correct guessing may have had.

I am doing a toner transfer to copper clad and etching the board myself.
Hence .. the printout ..

I'll take a look at that other schematic editor you mentioned.

Thanks for all the good info and help

Subject: Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] Re: Free PCB question

Charles R. Patton

I should add that I'm a big fan of LTspice, mentioned in an earlier post. Great way to make sure that I don't have any thinkos built into my design. I do software and firmware much more than hardware these days, so it helps to have another set of eyes (even if they are electronic) on my work.

when I try the link for the mini-tutorial I get this :

The FAQ is fairly informative though .. reading thru that now

Charles,

A very good answer. I have not found the learning curve on KiCad to be that steep, nor the re-learning curve either -- I tend to do a couple of boards, and then have many months before touching it again, but picking it back up has not been hard. However, I have not used FreePCB; it sounds like, from your description, that it must be significantly easier / more intuitive to use.

Randy,

On my Ubuntu installation of KiCad, the documentation is in /usr/share/doc/kicad. The tutorial is in the en/ folder; there are a number of demos in the demos/ folder, and instruction manuals in the help/ folder.

Is there a tutorial on the module editor and manipulating the components
libraries?
I have a bunch of duplicate parts after including the new library files ..
I need to UNDO that .. and start over ..
Thanks for the wiki mini .. it came up fine ..
