help .. last layer stuck on PCB

help .. last layer stuck on PCB

2011-02-14 by Randy S.

I used some glossy HP paper ..
Mad copies at the post office
and did the iron on thing ..

Traces look ok ..
But that last layer where the gloss is..
Cant get it to come off ..

Just using water .. and trying to scrub / peel it..

can I use like acetone, or alcohol ??

Randy - N2CUA

PS I do have other paper coming ..
the press n peel and going to try that dissolving paper..

Using acetone or alcohol could remove your toner. Have you thought about
just etching it with the gloss layer still on there? It may come off during
etch. The bond between the toner and the copper should be much stronger
than the gloss to the copper. You don't have much to loose. How long did
you soak it for?

With the glossy paper I am currently using (don't recall the brand/type, but it may well be HP), I have found that soaking it off doesn't work. However, if I peel it carefully while still hot, it comes right off, leaving the toner behind.

Well everyone has a different setup so there is a fair amount of trial and
error that goes on. Make sure to post pictures of your process.

Were you using Inkjet glossy photopaper or laser glossy photopaper? it
makes a huge difference.

I have HP laser glossy presentation paper. That seems to be the
recommendation more than photo paper. Product code Q2546A.

I use front and back pages of magazines like Circuit Cellar or Elektor with
great success. Not so much for the inside pages, they seem to be to thin.

I had some inkjet photo paper which I quite liked (but had to give up on
because it was thick and curly). You ended up with a thin layer of plastic
still stuck to the toner (and a few bridges here and there which you had to
be vigilant to toothbrush away), but that had the advantage of alleviating
the "pitting" you see in large solid areas (and I think the edges were
sharper as there were no stray fibres hanging over the edge).

Just making the point that not all inkjet paper is bad. I have seen some
other paper that was pure plastic - ain't never going to soak off..

OK ..
Update .. bought some hammermill .. something like that ..
Glossy brochure paper and ran that thru the laserjet at work ..
and a few pages off one of my precision shooting magazines.
Worse case I can go back to the post office copier and use the new paper.
So we'll see how that goes ..
Almost wish I hadnt of ordered that press-n-peel paper..

Hoping to see more updates on that disolving paper ..
With photos posted of PCBs made using that paper ??

Enjoying all this .. thanks so much for all the kind assistance..

Randy
