I think lcdpublishing is a well-respected member of our group. (Steve?) Someone has hacked or spoofed his account. Certainly "Jamak Topoli" is not lcdpublishing's real name.

People with Yahoo email accounts are open to this problem.

The address books for Yahoo email account are on the Yahoo email server. Not
in your computer at home or work.

Someone has got access to these accounts. Some of us feel a Yahoo employee
has sold this access.

I had to disable all the addresses in my Yahoo address book.

Chris had the same issue a few weeks ago and already changed his
passwords, made a scan, etc.

Somehow the crooks are getting in, a bit scary considering how
important email is to us now.

Yes, something is wrong, I am NOT a spammer!!!

2010-08-16 by Chris

Sorry about this guys. I am not a spammer but have no idea how this person(s) keeps doing this to me. I have changed passwords and have noticed that it does not matter which computer I use to post with. The last time this happened I was actually on my work computer which I completely killed and reinstalled the O.S.

I will have to post on some other groups to see if the problem happens everywhere or just on this forum.

I will change my password again but do not think this will clear up the problem as I have no idea how it is happening.

Again, sorry about this guys but I have no way of stopping it.

It's possible they're just doing simple "from" spoofing - if so, then the spammer does not and never has had access to yr account (or need not have anyway). It's perfectly allowable in email to put whatever "from" address you like, and if that's all yahoo groups cares about, then you only have to have the email address of a valid group member.

Only way to stop it would be to subscribe under a different email. Or get Y! groups to do much more thorough authenticity checking, which is actually pretty hard (both hard itself and hard to get Y! to change in a hurry).

I'll just try a quick post as me but from a totally different account/server and see what happens ...

... so it looks like it's trivial to post under any name at all, using any valid list member address. This isn't really Y!'s fault, email was never designed to be verifiably authentic. I could post as "Barack Obama" using Chris' email address (but I wont, for several reasons).

Group messages are viewable without requiring a login, and while it only shows the part before the @, my hunch is the spammer has had an automated script skim all group archives and then add "@..." to all users and tried to post from those addresses. Does anyone else post using a yahoo email?

I banned a member who was spamming my LPC2000 Yahoo group. He got in
touch with me and said that someone had spoofed his account. The same
thing probably happened to you. You could rejoin Yahoo with a new account.

I don't, I've always used an alias to my own account with my own ISP. I've
always been suspicious of Yahoo and don't like some aspects of their T&C

The problem is that the messages are going to everyone in Chris' Yahoo
address book. That address book is on the Yahoo server. Can you send a
message to everyone that is in Chris' address book?

Ah, I didn't see any of that happening, just the list post. Maybe I wasn't paying full attention, if that's the case, then he must be compromised.

This happened to me about a month ago. Norton could not find any thing in my
computer. It took me a couple of day days to find it.

When I disabled all the addresses in my Yahoo address book it stopped.

Re: [Homebrew_PCBs] Yes, something is wrong, I am NOT a spammer!!!

2010-08-16 by Stefan Trethan

Piers,

The spammer could get the email address everywhere, not just from the
yahoo group archives. Every person Chris has ever sent an email to has
the address (and could be infected with a virus etc.). Also every
person who subscribes to this list in email form sees the email
address of everyone who posts.

If I was a spammer, I would just subscribe to all lists and the valid
addresses would come flooding in!

A long long while ago someone sent spam with my address. It was just
once and stopped (or maybe it didn't but google mail spam filter
catches spam sent from myself, hehe). I changed all passwords but
don't know if that was even necessary.

I think lcdpublishing is a well-respected member of our group. (Steve?)
Someone has hacked or spoofed his account. Certainly "Jamak Topoli" is not
lcdpublishing's real name.

Donald.

Chris,
Have you tried notifying Yahoo? I had this happen to my account so I notified Yahoo and changed my password. If I remember right this is how to contact Yahoo:

1) Click on Help (upper left corner of mail page, next to Sign-out)
2) Click on Help again
3) Click on Customer Care (lower right)

I haven't had a problem since I took these steps, but who knows.

Good luck!

Frank P.

Yep, I do.... Did you have anything in mind?

Also, Yahoo was hacked 12-18 months ago. The thought at the time was that the hackers got IDs, passwords and address lists.

I had a problem about 12 months ago, but I notified Yahoo and changed my account password. The advantage I have over others is that I use a very strange address QZ9090@.... I created this email address on purpose to foil potential hackers. Very few words or names in the English language start with Q or Z.

I think the Internet can be a very dangerous place. Could you imagine if someone aggregated all your Group postings and established a profile of you...... Big Brother is watching.... ;-)

As much as I joke about this, I wouldn't be surprised if Homeland Security was doing this already (under the Patriot Act).

I contacted Yahoo and my fingers are crossed they can make this problem go away. In the meantime I will try to avoid the groups for a while to see if that helps.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
