Stefan,
Because I use the 'scratch' method, I don't plot the actual traces.
Instead, I use a custom written ULP from Eagle to generate the HPGL output
for the top and bottom sides of the board. Then I use a program that
post-processes the HPGL from there and then sends it to the plotter. In this
post-processing program I suck in the drill file and add filled circles to
the middle of each hole so as to etch away the copper in the middle of each
drill hole. So that's the method I use.

[Homebrew_PCBs] Which drill bit sizes would you suggest to buy?

2003-06-20 by Stefan Trethan

hi!

I want now to buy some carbide drill bits now at ebay.
there is a guy selling used, but sharp, bits. (all customers are very
satisfied without regrinding them)

i will have to order them soon because he also offers carbide mill blades
now, this blades look like a circular saw
blade but have a slightly bigger center hole (22mm). the outer diameter is
55mm.
they are made of carbide steel and i think they would be suitable as
circular saw blade.
the carbide blade from proxxon costs eur30, these blades are much cheaper.
sure, i will have to make some kind of adaptor to mount them on a 10mm
spindle but i think i can do this.

but to the drills:
he sells 100drills for ~eur 20.

so i can take some...

but which diameters should i choose?
until now i used hss drills, because my drilling motors would break the
carbide (especially at freehand use).

i never drilled 0.6mm, does it make sense to buy them? are many component
legs suited for this?
do they break too easily or can i work with them (good motor and pivoting
press)?

i will of course buy some 0.8mm and few 1mm too.

so what do you suggest, which drills use you most?
which diameters can you recommend to buy and in which number?

he has all standard diameters i think and (and also the ones not so
standard) so it's hard to choose.

thanks for any suggestions.

//////

drill press possible viewing apparatus:
i found a old (russian?) microscope here. it has 2 lenses on a revolver, x8
and x20.
i think this would be fine for a drill viewing device.
if i mount the whole revolver i might use also the x20 lens for other
inspections.

have you any ideas how to illuminate the pcb then?
i guess when using a camera it needn't be too bright but if trying
projection it has to be damn bright?

Stefan

I most often use 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 1 and 1.2 diameters

The 0.4 and 0.6 ones are mostly for vias. So, unless you intend to
create double or multilayer PCB's those small ones are not needed. It
of course may also depends on the method of how you do your through
hole connection.

I don't recomend to buy the circular saw cause there is not too much
space inside the proxxon saw to create an adapter. I agree that it CAN
be done, but question is if it's really worth it. The adapter should
be made of steel and createing one would take ~2 to 3 hours of work. I
then would prefer to buy a regular blade. Besides, such official
blades also pop up on e-bay every now and then.

thanks for the drill suggestions.

i rather thought of building the entire saw myself one time...
the proxxon saw it quite expensive...

I use 0.8 and 1.0 mm mostly. I've got a couple of 0.6 mm. They are useful
for small vias.

I use the reground carbide drills, as well as HSS. The carbide ones do break
easily, though.

I only use 0,7 and 1mm for components, and 1,5mm, 2mm, 3mm etc
for mounting pouposes.
