Has anyone tried an Ironing Press instead of an iron to transfer laser toner?

Has anyone tried an Ironing Press instead of an iron to transfer laser toner?

2007-04-16 by chalaco_51

I've been having some bad results with my present procedure to transfer
toner using the old iron method, and this is even with the blue peel
stuff.

I have been thinking of purchasing an ironing press a Conair (~$90) or
even a more expensive one like a Simplicity (~$150) which can add up
100lbs of pressure.

I have also consider on buying a laminator but the size of the boards
I have going are 6x6 inches at a minumum and going through a laminator
8 to 10 times with a thickness of 60 mils may end up screwing up the
laminator. The wife has bought into the idea of a more expensive
ironing press, since she could also use it.

Does anyone have any comments in the pros and cons on using an ironing
press for toner transfer?

Thanks for any feedback.

Chalaco,
What laser printer are you using? Is the iron on its highest setting?
I recently discovered that my Brother laser does not work well at all
for TT, but this may go for other printers as well.

I am presently using an HP Laserjet 1200, the problem that I am seeing
is that since the board is bigger than the small iron I am using, the
board appears not to get the heat evenly and after the TT I find that
there are some areas that have not been transferred correctly. I have
done smaller boards which have worked out OK, however with bigger
boards the issue shows up. This is why I am trying to understand if
the iron press is a better way to go.

Not sure yet but it seems that I will be getting one since the way has
warmed upt to the idea of getting one.

I will let you all know how it comes out.

Thanks

I'm glad you mentioned this because it gave me an idea which has never
occured to me before. It would probably yeild very similar results to
a press if you were to place a nice hefty peice of metal on top of the
board and toner and heat it with a heat gun(hot air gun, paint gun, a
few other names I'm sure)

I wonder how many "preheat" the copper clad with the iron
prior to laying down the paper?

I find that I get much, much better results when I
preheat.

i doubt it'll work good (uneven pressure).

If you want a real sturdy laminator take an old fuser from a copier and
modify it. They make them any width you can find a scrapped copier for,
and the older ones are mostly metal. It needs a drive motor and a
thermostat circuit added, but then it's great, only one pass needed.

The teflon coat can be shot, so if you have none maybe a copier repair
tech would give you one where he changed the whole fuser unit.
In a laser printer is the same thing, but often smaller.
