I have used a black laser for pcb work. The registration wasn't great
and the image had 'waves' of non-linearity.

Color works the same way. I would think that if you printed black
nothing would be the wiser and I'd be surprised if color didn't work.

All have toner which consists of pigment and plastic microspheres. The
fuser heats and melts the plastic, which holds the toner.

Toner transfer melts theplastic again and causes it to adhere to the
copper. The color is insignificant, unless it requires less/more heat
or somehow doesn't adhere as well.

Let us know :)

I have an HP Color Laserjet 2550N. The black does TT just fine (down
to about 7mil), but the colors don't. The printer doesn't do a 100%
fill for 100% color, so the coverage is very spotty (especially yellow
- I was trying to do a silk print). I haven't taken the time to
figure out how to *get* 100% coverage yet, though. I suspect some PCL
magic might do it. Each time I try to do multiple colors to get
black, it doesn't come out as good as just black.

Well in the few minutes since i sent the email i did a quick test, and get the same results as you, but i do get a lot of toner on the paper, and a few spots, but still its better than my old printer so im happy. I have not etched a board but i believe it will be ok. Also i noted that with different paper settings i get very different results so a bit more testing and i recon this will be fine.

Thanks for the input.
But still, im on the hunt for the perfect paper........

Yes colour works just as well as black, but i do have to use more heat and my laminator is only just managing it.

(Paper Tests)
Oh BWT i tried some HP Laser Glossy paper (Q2552A) this does work very well, but it a little harder to remove than the current No 1 HP paper the Everyday semi Gloss inkjet stuff, i can remember the number. Anyway the problem i had with the semi gloss was that i got very small holes in the toner and these would etch as well, made a speckled board but it still worked. The new laser gloss paper is harder to remove, but results in a good solid toner layer and does not etch through!

Whilst i was at staples i also noticed that HP also sell a Photo Glossy Laser paper. Its much thicker than Q2552A, in going to give this a try soon, id be interested if anybody else has tried it?

What printer/software are you using to print in color? My printer
just doesn't put as much toner on the paper when you choose color, I
haven't figured out how to get 100% coverage yet, at least with
yellow.

My printer is the HP Color Laserjet 1600, i never tried yellow, i just printed out a circuit diagram from Eagle and used the laminator to get it on a board, colours were sort of grey, green and dark red. all of them a mix of toners i would guess.
