We need a Wiki

We need a Wiki

2007-01-15 by David McNab

Hi,

I'm starting to feel that the Homebrew_PCBs group is in desperate need
of a wiki.

Write access would be restricted to group members.
Read access would either be open, or restricted to group members,
according to the group management's decision.

To me, a wiki is the best way of getting maximum info organisation for
the least effort.

What do people think?
Also, given that YahooGroups doesn't seem to offer wiki, what would be
the best hosting and management arrangements?

Cheers
David

Awesome!! :))

Would be great if the wiki could be loudly and clearly linked from the
Yahoo Groups Homebrew_PCBs homepage - something for the group admins.

Given that I'm in the high-energy early learning curve phase of PCB
production, I'd be willing to put some energy into populating the wiki.
I'm sure there'd be many others here in a similar position.

One page already materialising in my mind is a very simple synopsis of
overall PCB creation methods, including TT, photo, direct print, milling
etc, each with pros/cons summaries, and links to clear recipes.

Cheers
David

The reason i doubted the success of a wiki in the past is because we
always disagree.
I suppose it's worth a shot though.

It needs a logo, some working help pages (which will probably involve reading
up on Mediawiki templates and other such fun) and a decent main page, not
necessarily in that order.

I'll put some time and energy into it when I locate a Round Tuit. I've got a
ton of work to do over the next couple of weeks - if I can shift some of that,
I might be able to get a day or so off in the not too distant future...

Thanks.

I have offered my site:
http://www.massmind.org on a few occasions. It is not fancy or
polished (code help appreciated), but it has wiki features. It used
html rather than that wiki code stuff, but anyone who has a hope of
etching a PCB can understand <B>HTML</B> vice *WIKI* and <I>HTML</I>
vice /WIKI/. It isn't rocket science. The site also supports blog
features allowing most new information, links, questions, etc... to
be posted as a comment to the bottom of the page via a VERY easy
little form and the page editor(s) can then edit that in with the
WYSIWYG or HTML editor online.

I do not allow the direct upload of pictures (bad experience with
unknowningly hosting porn, keeping wiki/blog spam out is hard enough
in text) but anyone can email or ftp a photo to me and I will
quickly review and post it.

massmind only allows one page editor per page, but there is no
reason why that editor account could not be shared with a few
different people. If needed, I can enable trusted editors to
be "site editors" which gives them the ability to edit any page.

I certainly agree.

I've already documented several pages of data from this and other
groups on the site. That is a head start that other sites will not
have.

http://techref.massmind.org/techref/pcbs.htm
http://techref.massmind.org/techref/pcbetch.htm
http://techref.massmind.org/techref/tonertransfer.htm
http://techref.massmind.org/techref/pcb/etch/directinkjetresist.htm

And the site has many thousands of pages on related EE subjects.

Why start over?

I've already set up a wiki - http://pcbwiki.philpem.me.uk/
Anyone want to contribute some content?

Thanks.
