Epson 850 - getting closer but now have an error problem?

Epson 850 - getting closer but now have an error problem?

2006-04-24 by lcdpublishing

I got most of the mechanicals out of the way now and decided to put
it back together where I can to check to see if it will work still.
I got everything wired back up and power it up. It seems to do fine
for a while - you hear it doing it's usual cleaning - the main
feeder shaft seems to rotate the right direction etc.

However, when it finishes that up, The "Paper" LED blinks and both
inks show as being empty. I don't have this printer connected to a
computer at the moment so that could be partially the problem - not
sure either way.

There is one thing I have to remove and this too could be the
problem. The paper feeder has an opto sensor on it to detect the
position of a shaft (the one that holds the cams to feed the paper
in). This sensor is NOT the paper "leading edge" sensor. I have
tried to manual rotate that shaft so the sensor can "see" through
the hole and so that it is blocked - same errors either way.

Anyone have any suggestions - I am all ears .

Thanks

Chris

I had something like that on the C84.

On mine, that sensor is a 'paper present in paper path' sensor, not a 'paper
ready for feeding' sensor. Does that make sense?

I remember having problems testing the C84, my initial reaction was to
trigger this sensor, that gave me an error.

The paper edge sensor may be expected to go active after a certain
time from the paper pick up sensor. The paper pick up roller picks up,
paper curls around, then the paper edge/present sensor goes active. If
you don't get it around the time the printer expects after the first
sensor, the printer may give an error, seeing that it didn't really pick
up a piece of paper when it thought it did.. IOW in some printers these
sensors aren't independent and just for their job, it is expecting a
certain chain of events with pretty specific timing along the paper path
or gives a feed error or similar. So you may have to move the pick up
roller or fake the signal back along the straight path far enough to
have the right timing.

Hmm, having only two sensors, I tried all the combinations about 5
times and it still powers up in "error Mode". It thinks there is a
paper jam according to the manual. I also tried connecting my
computer to it - can't find a driver to work with XP either!

They have it for win3.1, 95, 98, me, NT, and 2000 but not XP - GRRRR!

I used the Windows driver for it but I don't think that will work
out in the long run.

Either way, that didn't correct the error problem either.

Yeah, I think you are on the right track there - it is a timing
issue of some sort I think. I don't think it has to do with the
leading edge detector though. I don't recall this printer every
picking up a piece of paper and having it ready to print during
power up. Rather, the only time paper is picked up is when it is
suppose to print something.

It has to be something silly with that other sensor on the feeder.
I will have to watch the gear train to see what it is doing and try
to "open/close" the switch in sequence to that gearing and see if
that helps.

That is one reason why I put the paper feeder back on the printer.

I wanted to learn the proper sequence of paper feeding.
