Don't bother building a timer, just pinch the controls off an old microwave oven. 'Dead' microwaves usually have a blown fuse, or no longer match the kitchen decor. They have a relay to turn the magnetron on & off, hook the UV tubes to that. As a bonus you can hook up the door switches as a safety interlock and even put the little 25w globe in the box too. Steer clear of the capacitor, that will kill you if you touch it while it's charged. Put the two magnets out of the magnetron as well. The rest is just carpentry. The truly lazy use an old wooden drawer for the box.
