I've had the same experience, no sparks , boiling, or fizzing of any description when microwaving concentrated ferric chloride, in a open plastic ice-cream container. My only concern is having my head too close above the container of steaming etchant while stroking a paint brush over the PCB. I've done the same with ammonium persulfate. Gloves are mandatory.
