I can see how someone would take a shock absorber and modify it into a short travel linear slide, but i don't see how the air cushions can be used. By the way, train carriages here use a similar system of very large pneumatic cushions for shock dampening - the kind of train you are in danger of falling asleep and missing your stop because the ride is so smooth.
