CMI IIx Emulation

CMI IIx Emulation

2010-02-15 by philipbennett

Hi folks,

First post here on this group...

I've been working on adding CMI IIx support to the MESS emulator. Most of the critical hardware is emulated, with the notable exception of sound:

http://philwip.mameworld.info/cmi_iix.html

Nothing is public yet - I'm hoping to add basic sound support and speed things up a bit before releasing it.

This obviously isn't going to be the same as a real CMI but the experience should be somewhat educational :)

Thoughts?

Phil

OK...

How will you produce sound with your emulator ?

And especially how do you control real-time of the filters ?

I am curious to hear the result.

The album that still impresses me the most: The Art Of Noise - The Ambient Collection.

This gives a very good impression of what a IIx can do.

By the way, I have a tape somewhere, with a copy of an LP called "Insects", if memory serves me right. Can't find any info about it right now. This LP demonstrates the very interesting things you can do with the CMI's envelopes. Remember, the CMI is a synth! ;-)
Does anyone knows this LP?

Regards,

Peter Kersten.

On my site, there is a list of "Top Fairlight Songs Of All Time", most
of which were probably done with Series II or IIx. These songs were
chosen by an online poll I conducted a while ago.

Hi,

maybe do you mean "The Insect Musicians" by Graeme Revell from 1986 I think ?

At the time Revell was still into his "SPK"
project than into Hollywood film music as he is
today.

This LP is made with samples from insects and
edited with the CMI IIx. The original LP came
with a booklet demonstrating how the samples were
made and treated with loads of CMI display
inmages.

In the 90ies there was also a CD release,
together with Revell's "The music of Adolf
Wölfli" on it.

In examples, Fairlight is prominently featured on Jarre's Zoolook,
but the example plays Zoolookologie (which prominently features
Emulator)

The "Insects" album is great! Thanks for that one.

The Art Of Noise - "The Ambient Collection" spans their whole career, so it has series 3 and Akai S900. For purely IIx sampling, and an all round great listen, the boxed set "And what have you done with my Body, God?" is superb. Demos of all the early tracks, and a transcript of a round table discussion with all the original members.
