Series III - acts like 14 bit sampler?

Series III - acts like 14 bit sampler?

2009-08-22 by dvdborn

Among all the Series 30A messages I remember reading somewhere that the Series III behaves more like a 14 bit than a 16 bit sampler.

Could anyone explain why this is? Or was this a false statement?

Although the details are not yet finalised, the 30A will have several modes ranging from 8 bit to 36 bit precision.

Yes, this is definitly strange. Further , my Series III / Mfx2 has sample & hold cards on every DA converters. If I remind well, Fairlight announced 100 db for the dynamic. Thats nearly 17 bit. And the sound had more punch compared to my old rev6.
Perhaps the 14 bit was the dynamic of the first series III ?

Hello,

Well I do remember a very experienced CMI 3 user saying that the older
Analog output boards without the sample & hold daughter board actually had
more character when playing sounds from the CMI 3 library. I have yet to do
an A/B comparision between the two ! There is supposed to be more aliasing
resulting in more " graininess " in the sound.

Regards,

James
