A190-4 USB port MIDI feedback loop

A190-4 USB port MIDI feedback loop

2015-07-09 by bomarm@yahoo.com

I have recently acquired a Doepfer A190-4 USB/MIDI CV/GATE module and installed it in my Make Noise Shared System (black/gold) which is connected to my Mac Pro via USB using Logic Pro 9.1.8.

When I try to record via the USB connection, I get all sorts of stuck notes and MIDI feedback (for lack of a better tern). Example, I put A190-4 track in record and press a key on my MIDI keyboard the note gets recorded and never stops and continues to record over and over even though I have lifted my finger off of the key, I press a second key and second key gets recorded and never stops in addition to the 1st key, etc. It feels like a MIDI loop or feedback. In normal circumstances one would turn off "MIDI Thru" on a given instrument. Unfortunately the A190-4 has no such function. Using the MIDI connection with the A190-4 there are no issues but I have no available MIDI ports on my patch bay hence why I would like to make the USB port work.

The other logical place I looked was the "Audio MIDI Setup" app but unfortunately here the A190-4 ports (in/out) are grayed out so I can not turn the MIDI OUT to off.

Ive emailed Doepfer and they in short stated that there is a feedback issue that happens with the USB port and they will consider fixing it with the next update?? (not the answer I was hoping for)

Anyone have any suggestions as how to stop this from happening?

You should not turn off the output, but the input! You don't want to
receive MIDI data, that come in via USB from the A-190-4

I don't know about Logic 9, but in Logic 7 I can do that for every class
compliant device in the songs MIDI-properties

Thanks for the input...(no pun intended :)

You are correct. The idea is to TURN OFF the INPUT of the A190-4 via USB in LOGIC but I was referring to the OUTPUT of the A190-4 in "Audio Midi Setup" NOT Logic (so the A190-4 would stop its MIDI OUTPUT to Logic. I want the A190-4 to Receive MIDI info only and NOT OUTPUT any MIDI info which is what's causing problems).
That being said you can not turn off either one of those settings (IN or OUT) for the A190-4 in the "Audio MIDI Setup". They are both grayed out.

In Logic under Settings>MIDI>General>MIDI Thru, you have the option to TURN OFF any instrument that does not have a MIDI Thru on/off switch but this seems to have no effect what so ever even when I choose the A90-4 (not sure why). :(
