Dark enegy VCO out

Dark enegy VCO out

2014-06-11 by raccoon_boy@yahoo.com

Hi there

I have a Dark Energy Mark I.

I believe it is possible to output the VCO (and VCF) but not quite sure how.

I have some electronic and soldering experience and can usually modify things with some confidence, but usually with some basic instructions.

I have the correct version of the DE (V2 2010) which has capability of outputtng the VCO (triangle). In the technical information it says it is the right pin of JP13 on the voice board. But how would I get this out?

Woud it be a sort of jumper with a wire attached to it? and then I attach this straight to a jack socket?

Do I need to do anything with the ground part of the JP13 to keep the socket grounded, or can I just ignore this?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Dan

PS: Is there any use for VCF out other than for sending out a sine wave?

Unfortunately: It is not possible for the DE MkI

The CEM3394 which is used in the Mk I does not provide access to the
signal path:

Sorry - but I have to contradict. In the the second version of the Dark
Energy I we added internal buffers to the main VCO capacitor (pin 4 of the
CEM3394) and to the main VCF capacitor (pin 15 of the CEM3394) to have
available at least the triangle of the VCO and the VCF signal available for
further processing. The idea was at this time to expand the Dark Energy by
another unit (Dark Matter) that should include waveform
processors/multipliers, another filter (12dB multimode), ring modulator,
S&H, a second VCO, a second envelope generator, a BBD unit and so on. But
then the CEM3394 ran out and we had to cancel this idea. Instead of this the
Dark Energy II was designed. The technical document of the Dark Energy I
mentions JP13 as "only available from version 2 of the voice board
(recognizable at the silk screen printing V2 2010)":

right pin of JP13 = VCO triangle output (buffered)
center pin of JP13 = GND
left pin of JP13 = VCF output (buffered)

If sockets are connected to these terminals I'd recommend 1k serial
resistors to protect the buffers against short circuits.

Best wishes

thanks Dieter

This is what I thought. Interesting to hear about the Dark Matter, pity that didn't work out.

However I'm really not sure how to connect a socket to a terminal :( Or how to add a 1k resister in serial. I have no doubt I could do this safely with some basic instructions, but it would kind of need to be spelled out to me.

Any advice from anybody greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

If you have no experience with soldering and no basic electronic knowledge
I'd advise against such a modification.

I can solder and can modify electronic stuff safely, but only with instructions I'm afraid.

Oh well, I'll keep reading about circuits and I'll figure it out one day

Cheers

Then simply connect one terminal of the 1k serial resistor to the output pin
(VCO Out or VCF Out) and the second terminal to the tip terminal of the
socket. GND has to be connected to the corresponding terminals of both
sockets. You also find some instructions on the A-100 DIY page
(www.doepfer.com > PRODUCTS > A-100 > DIY page)

Hope this helps
