New Module Idea: Jumper Switches (extracted from A-101-6 thread)

Hi All

I'm moving this idea our of the A-101-6 thread so it doesn't get lost. Basically my idea for a new utility module is a 6HP module with 8 switches and 8 LEDs arranged in a row vertically. The LEDs only indicate the switch positions so are not 100% necessary - this could make it 4hp. Each switch simply has a ~70cm lead with a jumper-style connector on it to allow it to connect to the option jumpers on the back of many of Doepfer's modules. Changing the switch would effectively put on, or remove the jumper without having to remove the module(s) from the case.

There are so many modules with hidden jumper functions that I believe this module would be a very useful addition.

Florian has already mentioned that this is a very simple DY module, but I believe the Doepfer should make an official one because

1) Not everybody enjoys/is good at DIY

2) A DIY module may not look as good as a properly engineered and printed ones

3) I only want Doepfer modules in my box!

Also, Doepfer already successfully sell 'easy to DIY' modules - All four of the mult series for example.

Another idea for it would be to use DPDT switches and have 3-way cables/connectors to allow interfacing with other manufacturers' 3-way jumper blocks.

So, Dieter, what do you think of this idea?

Rich

I second this for a full 200%.

I like the idea but I'll have to to some research for how many modules and
for which functions this makes sense. Another idea would be a voltage
controlled version with electronic switches. This would increase the price
not very much (the expensive parts are the front panel, the switches and the
pcb) but add the possibility to control the functions also via voltages (if
it makes sense).

Best wishes

Hi Dieter

I'm glad to hear that you like my idea. Please remember that many other module manufacturers' modules have option jumpers so it's not just A-100 modules that would benefit from a module like this.

I have actually already DIY'd a basic (non-VC, non-LED) version for my last eurorack synth and used it all the time. My new synth is 100% Doepfer so I would love to see an officially designed and manufactured version.

I like the idea of voltage control as long as the price/size doesn't increase too much. For example I think that voltage control over the A-148's S&H/T&H functionality would be interesting, and I'm sure there are many other modules that would benefit in a similar way.

Other modules that I don't think need VC-controlled jumpers would be for exmaple A-140 and A-110 to remove them from the gate/CV bus.

Anyway - I will leave you to your jumper research Dieter. Maybe we could have a vote once you have the total number of jumper-reliant modules?

Cheers

Richard

The idea has been around for a few years already:

It9;d be nice if a finished official module would hit the market.
Interested by the addition of CV control here !
