Help with A-112 Sampler please

Help with A-112 Sampler please

2014-05-22 by richyho@virginmedia.com

I have an A-112 and I don't think it's working. Here are the symptoms.

I record a sample with the following switch settings S1, Rec, Norm. Sound patched to 'Audio/Wave-CV in'. I hear the sound via 'audio out' OK and can adust it's level and quality with the 2 lower knobs.

I then either manually trigger the recording by pressing the button, or hold the gate high by other means. The LED lights until the sample buffer is full then goes out.

I let go of the button then set the switches to S1, Play, Norm, press the manual gate and hear nothing. I also try using a square wave of the LFO to trigger playback and on each cylce I hear a slight click/pop, but nothing like the sound that went in.

I have tried this with all setting of attenuation and tune/cv knob. It just appears to record OK, but not playback.

Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

Rich

If it's an older module first of all check the battery. Details on the FAQ
page of our website:

www.doepfer.com > FAQ > General > Lifespan of rechargeable batteries (used
for memory backup)

If the battery is OK the module seems to be faulty and has to be sent in to
the dealer where you purchased it.

Yes, it's an old one. So if the battery is dead then the module will not play back and will behave like I have explained? The memory needs this battery even if the module is powered from the bus?

I really hope that this is the problem.

Thanks Dieter

It could be the battery but that's not for sure. You should measure the
voltage of the battery to find out if this might be the reason. The voltage
should read at least ~ 3.4 V (the specified voltage is 3.6V). But even other
faults are possible (e.g. broken RAM or processor or ....)

Seems to be the correct one. But please measure the voltage of the built-in
battery before you replace it. Maybe it's not the battery !
If it's not the battery there is probably nothing you can do and you have to
send in the module for repair to the dealer where you purchased it.

It was the battery - the negative wire had actually corroded to the point where it had gone green and broken away from the battery! I replaced the battery with one from Maplin (http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/pcb-mounted-nimh-3v80h-battery-1-pack-bn22y) and it now works as it should. Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Rich

PS: What an amazing module! So many modes and such varied sounds. Love it.

I'm glad to hear that the module is working now again. The A-112 is one of
my favourites too - despite the poor 8 bit. Especially in wavetable mode
with a "normal" audio sample (e.g. speech) and the CV for the wabetable
coming from a sequencer.

I can see how having perhaps 2 or 3 of these samplers filtered and mixed together, cross-fading and panning with slow random, slewed modulation of the wavetable positions, cutoff frequencies and spatial position would create a fantastic atmospheric canvas.

I love the way low-pass filtering the samples smooths out some of the 'poor 8-bit' raw quality. I like to filter in this way and then follow it with some re-destruction using an A-189-1 and then add some reverb. So many possibilities.

You can maybe guess that I annoy my wife and daughters with these sounds!
