Doepfer jacks

2014-02-15 by Tonko Sekulo

Hi,

I am buying a lot of Doepfer modules lately and they always have very
stiff jacks when inserting a patch cable, which I like, but in a last
shipment I got module with much more loose jacks. Is that a normal
variation due to different jack manufacturing series or is smth wrong
with my module?

Thank you!

Thank you, and yes, all modules are brand new. They still click but
everything is much more loose and much less force is needed to insert
or remove them. So this is not normal?

Where did you buy them and what module is this? There may be modules
which are bought rarely. So if the dealer is a big dealer, then maybe he
had some NOS parts. In this case it is possible, that you bought a pre
2003 module.

I bought an A 156 from Emis in December 2013 and the jacks are loose in the sockets.

Using todays original Doepfer cables?

Unfortunately the 3.5mm jacks are not a standard. Most sockets and plugs
work with eachother, but you cannot rely on that every cable works
reliably with every socket.

I bought them in schneidersladen where I buy most of my stuff. The
modules in question are a-166 dual logic and a-134-1 panning module. I
don't think these should be old modules since these are quite popular
modules I suppose.
And yes, I have only original Doepfer cables, bought anywhere from
2005 till 2013. They all feel the same with jacks in question.

Yes, those should be new.

Indeed there was about one year ago a batch of sockets which had a lower
insertion force. The problem is that there is no specification about the
insertion force and the manufacturer mentioned that everything is within the
limits. But the electrical connections should be fine even if the insertion
force is smaller compared to older modules. In July 2013 we instructed our
assembly company to take some samples from each batch of the sockets and to
refuse the batch if the insertion force is clearly smaller compared to the
former sockets.

Best wishes
