Darktime, unable to insert a rest

Darktime, unable to insert a rest

2014-01-01 by draks@apollo111.demon.co.uk

My brother is having difficulty with his Darktime. He describes the issue below

"I want to enter a rest in a sequence of 8 notes. So, as per the manual, I set the step to off and expect to hear silence of a duration equivalent to the notes of the rest of the sequence when the sweep gets to that point. Instead a note still sounds, the pitch of which is as set by the pitch knob prior to flicking the switch to 'off'. Turning the knob does change the pitch of the sounding 'rest note'. Switching to 'on' again and twiddling the now changes the pitch of the step but flicking it to off retains the new pitch which is sounded with the rest of the sequence!

Any suggestion as to what I'm doing wrong?"

I can only suggest wiping the os and re-installing it

Thanks

Anoop

Hello

The step-off setting only means, that no gate/trigger is sent.

The question is not the sequence, but the sound setting. If the
soundsettings have a long release, then the synth will of course sound
on in the pause. He should try with a short or zero release, also he
must set the tuning of the 'pause'-step to the tuning of the step before.

That is how step sequencers do work.

exactly, what Florian said.

i also find it helpful to set sustain to zero, and use both the decay & release settings to get the effect you want.

Or, if using with a modular system, employ a Sample & Hold module to control when the pitches hold and change. I've done that when using a single CV sequence and multiple Gate patterns to create several patterns from the one CV sequence (if two gate patterns are active simultaneously, they are always in tune, while controlling separate voices... Like a 16th note, high pitch pattern with occasional sub octave notes). Having the S&H in effect, you get single, long sub tones, rather than a "bending" release stage.

Try it out. I also designed a Reaktor ensemble like this if any of you use Reaktor.

AW: [Doepfer_a100] Darktime, unable to insert a rest

2014-01-07 by yahoo@doepfer.de

The Dark Time does not generate tones but only the control signals CV and
Gate that can be used to generate a tone. It depends upon the settings of
the sound generation unit (especially release of the envelope generator) if
the tone ends when the gate turns low.

We considered the keep the CV of a step when the following step is off. But
we cancelled this idea as it's required to generate legato sounds (i.e. the
pitch changes without starting a new envelope).

Best wishes
