A-192-2 with CV-only sequencer and DX7 midi synth?

A-192-2 with CV-only sequencer and DX7 midi synth?

2013-09-08 by willthomaslong@yahoo.com

Has anyone tried a combination like this? I have a Roland MC-4 sequencer with only CV and Gate (No MIDI), and I'd like to use a DX7 (with MIDI, no CV) as the source/controller.

Has anyone done something similar with the A-192-2, or the MCV4?

What are you trying to do? If you're trying to play notes on the DX-7 and record them on the MC-4, then yes, that should work using the MCV-4 or A-192-2 to convert them. I haven't tried this, but the Yamaha and Doepfer devices both use the MIDI standard very well, and the Doepfer and Roland ones use the 1V/Oct standard very well, so it should work fine.

Hope that helps,
Zoë.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I'm trying to use the MC-4 to sequence notes on the DX7, and record them from the DX7 output (the same way you'd connect an analog monosynth with the MC-4, but without the converter in between).

But the MCV-4 and the A-192-2 convert in different directions, only one-way each. For instance, the MCV-4 is MIDI to CV, and the A-192-2 is CV-MIDI.

I'd guess the A-192-2 would work in this case, right?

Thanks!

Hello

Yes.

But why doing it the complicated (and expensive) way? If you want the
advantages of entering note on an numeric base, then use a c64 with
24track or an atari ST with Creator, and you are already in the MIDI domain.

actually the first gen DX7 has a pretty crap midi implementation (yamaha engineers got "mono mode" completely wrong & velocity only goes up to 100 not 127). if it's a DX7II then no prob.

Hmm, just to clarify, to make sure we're not talking at crossed purposes:

DX-7 -> A-190-2 -> MC-4 should work.
MC-4 -> A-192-2 -> DX-7 should work.

But only in that order. I got a bit confused as you mentioned the MCV-4, which I believe is the same as the A-190-2, but different (going in the other direction) from the A-192-2.

Just be mindful of whether you're converting *from* MIDI *to* CV (to play notes into the MC-4 via the DX-7's keyboard) or vice versa (to play DX-7 sounds in a rigid, quantised manner). But as Florian said, if you want to control a DX-7 numerically, you'd probably be better off with some old step sequencing software instead of the MC-4, that already has MIDI out.
