Wire for patch cables?

Wire for patch cables?

2012-07-05 by cliffmaniam

I am going to make up a bunch of patch cables, but having trouble finding a good source for wire. Anyone have a Mouse or Jameco part number for some decent single-conductor shielded wire?

thanks

Hi I have also been puzzling over this - specifically looking for a supplier of - decent single conductor shielded cable in different colours... red, green, yellow, blue, white - anything apart from grey or black!

So far I've drawn a blank...

I'm based in UK

Thanks

Neal

Hi

http://www.studiospares.com/cables+connectors/icat/shocablesconnectors/

or

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/

You might have to dig deep at RS

Not cheap, but superb quality.

And unfortunately: Note that this service is available to the UK only. Contact sales for international shipping charges.

Those are nice cables, but I just want wire. Make my own. Wire seems to be impossible to get in the US, i am considering using 50 ohm coax, which at least i can get from Belden. Sigh.
The studiospares site looks great, wish I could find something like that in the US...

I ran across this site last week - may be of some use - the site is mostly parts for guitar effects pedals -

http://www.mammothelectronics.com/category-s/148.htm

Color cables are available already made up -or- as just plain. Available by the foot or by the spool. Prices seem reasonable.

Would like opinions on these - if they would work for synths.

Forgive my naivety, but are modular patch cables (I presume you are talking about patch cables) made out of something esoteric? I would have assumed that decent instrument cable (e.g. for guitars, etc.) would be fine.

Guitar cable is typically way thicker than the sort of cable used for 3.5mm-1/8". Guitar cable has to stand up to a bit more stress from those guitarists jumping around :) Wire inside is usually 20 AWG or bigger, low capacitance is real important for guitarists. So, guitar cable is like this: http://www.awcwire.com/mfg/Belden/Part/9778 I think such wire would be way to big for my connectors, plus too much strain on the jacks. I'm looking for more like 28-30 AWG, which seems to be what I'm finding in pre-made cables. I am thinking maybe this, at last resort: http://www.awcwire.com/mfg/Belden/Part/9396 - notice it's less than 1/2 the thickness of the 20 AWG stuff.

Cable suitable for making patch leads is very available.

though it takes a fair bit of time to make just one lead, and you are
going to want up to 4 times as many patch leads as you have modules.

I make my own audio leads generally, but not patch leads.
I have a combination of doepfer and http://www.adinfinitummusic.com/
patch leads. I can't make them for less money than these sell for.

anyway - maybe if you really want to have the feeling of having made
them yourself, searching for "single core shielded cable" should put you
on the right track.

here's a local (to me, in Australia) example:
http://dicksmith.com.au/product/W2030/single-core-shielded-audio-cable
I've used this to make longer 1/8" plug cables for running to midi-cv
converters and my 101, etc, and it's what I'd be using if I wanted to
make all my own patch cables.

here's a hi quality and expensive example of what you might want.
http://www.canare.com/ProductItemDisplay.aspx?productItemID=62
though this may be a little large with outer diameter at 4mm. Check with
the plugs you want to use and see what cable they'll take.

have fun!
