Modular cases

Modular cases

2012-02-11 by Marc-Henri Arfeux

Hello to all members !
I ordered a A100 bs2 in flycase this week but already plan to extend this system in the future by a second case which will be of a personal conception as regards the modules. My aim is to be able to play the two units separately, and also to gather them in musical dialogue by patching. Since I am a new user the questions i will ask now are may be naive, and apologize in advance if it is the case.
1 - I would like to know the maximum length of Doepfer patch cords.
2 - I have been listening and watching the very interesting tutorial videos by Raul Pena. On one of them (number 21) present the sample rate reduction using T/H and and S/H with A148. During this video, Raul Pena uses a music plays by his mp3 player, patching of course this source in the sample in of A148. But could you tell me what kind of cord he uses to connect with his mp3 player ? Is it a monophonic adapter as we see one on the accessories page in Doepfer site ?
3 - Some of the Doepfer modules have usb sockets : what to they provide in terms of computer dialogue. For instance I read the A112 Sampler allows to store sounds by Midi Dump on a computer.
4 - Is it possible as I imagine, to control a Doepfer with an I Pad app such as Ian Boddy does here with a Serge Modular ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHS-z466iE8

5 - A last question for today, may be the most naive : I intend to perform and compose electroacoustic music with my Doepfer : I perfectly know any kind of module will be creative and useful for this purpose, depending on the patching and playing creativity of the musician. But does anyone could advise me modules that would be more accurately devoted and or essential to this exploration, apart those you find on the A100 bs2 ?

Thank you for you kind answers,
Have a beautiful week-end,
Marc-Henri Arfeux

Hi Marc-Henri,

1) as per their website the maximum length of Doepfer patch cords is
200cm. Should you require longer lengths it is absolutely possible to use
longer cables from other manufacturers.

4) Yes. You'll notice that in the beginning of the video Ian describes the
chain as IPad running ToucOsc -> Interface Alesis IO Dock -> MIDI Out to
Kenton Modular Solo -> 4x MIDI CC + Note & Gate. So he's using the MIDI Out
of the IPad to drive a MIDI to CV converter. Since you have the BS2 and thus
such a converter you should be fine. It will be only one channel though, as
opposed to the four channels in the video.

5) Both Pierre Schaeffer and KH Stockhausen had only very rudimentary means
to create electronic sounds. Basically test oscillators and tape. Add found
sounds in the case of Schaeffer. Everything had to be added to tape, often a
single wave cycle at a time. A few minutes would take months. Envelopes and
Amps had to be painstakingly cut out with a razor and glued back onto
masking tape.

The whole control voltage thing was invented to speed up this process and
add same playability. If you care for it, a fascinating account can be found
in 'Bernstein: The San Francisco Tape Music Center (2008 University of
California Press). That being said, your BS2 supplies a lot of the
techniques that were employed in the early days. You could add
reverberation, although both the GRM and the WDR studio used an actual echo
chamber and later plate echos. A fixed filter bank would also be keeping
with the spirit of the times.

Also old school (but neither GRM nor WDR) is the Trautonium project. The
(Mixtur) Trautonium is an electronic instrument that was developed in the
1930's by Werner Trautwein and used by Hindemith and later by Oskar Sala. In
conjunction with your BS2 and an A-113, an A-104 and an A-198 (orR2M) you
can recreate a single-manual version of that.

The answer to your 2 question.
I used my phone with a stereo 3.5 mm out to dual mono Y-adapter out. This can be purchased at any electronics store.
From that I patched a mono 3.5 mm doepfer cable into the a148.

You have to try it out as it depends upon the module and the cable
parameters. Each cable forms also a capacitor and inductivity which is
connected to the output of the module in question. For short cables these
unwanted electrical parameters can be usually neglected. The longer the
cable becomes the higher are the capacitor and inductivity values. It
depends upon the output circuitry of the module in question if a problem may
occur. The typical problem if a high frequency noise that appears if the
capacitive and/or inductive load goes beyond and certain value.

You may ask Raul (he is a member of this group).

If there is a USB socket at the front panel the function is described in the
user's manual or on the info page (e.g. A-190-3, A-198). If there is an
internal USB socket only (e.g. A-187-1) this is for internal use in the
factory only (e.g. for firmware upload during production). Please do not
connect these internal USB sockets.
