Bunch of questions about the Doepfer Modular (sonority, VCO tracking...)

Bunch of questions about the Doepfer Modular (sonority, VCO tracking...)

2011-09-20 by Paulo

Hi

I am thinking of getting a Doepfer modular synth but in order to do so I'll have to sell a couple of monophonic synths (Yamaha CS5/10/15 and Teisco S110f), so I need to be sure it's a good solution for me before selling those old great monophonic synths.

My first question is how good is the VCOs tracking?

I want to use the modular to create experimental sounds, but since it will be replacing some of my monophonic synths, I want to be able to do some melodies and solos with it too.

My second question is about how good it sounds for what I want to do...
I really like old electronic German music, like Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and so on.

The best demos I see for this kind of stuff are using Moog Modular clones (MOS-Lab, COTK, Synthesizers.com...), but those are a bit too expensive for me...
And then I saw this demo which has the kind of sounds I'm looking for - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykyUr2nu-lI - which made me think the Doepfer Modular would be a good solution, and within range if I sell the monophonic synths I have.

Do you think I'll be happy enough with the Doepfer, considering the difference in price and the fact that there are many more modules available in second hand than from other brands?

My third question is... if I end up getting one of the Moog Modular clones, will the Doepfer still be useful?

Since the Doepfer has many more modules available, I'd expect it to be...

My last question now... what modules could give me a similar sound to the one I get from my Yamaha CSs and Teisco S110f?

It's not crucial I get a perfect emulation, as I want to keep at least one Teisco S110f and a Yamaha CS15, but if I can get a similar sound to those, it would be great, as I quite like their sound.

Thanks in advance,
Best

Paulo

Hi Paulo!

That's a nice demo. I don't think there's anything there that's specific to one particular synthesiser's sound. Many synths, and most modulars in particular, can make those sorts of sounds. It's much more in the knowledge and skill of patching and playing than in the synthesiser you happen to use.

I'd still recommend a Doepfer A-100, but more for its extensive range of modules (it gives you a *lot* of variety to play with), small size and affordability. You may get it in order to make music in the vein of the classic Berlin sound, but then find out you can do so much more with it as well.

Hmm, now I want to make Namlook style music... :D

Hope that helps,
Zoe.

About the VCOs: The A-111-1 tracks much better than the A-110 it is almost perfect. I tested them against digital synth.
About the sound: It can be very snappy ,thanks to the A-140 adsr and there is so many filters to choose from, you can get a very moogy sound out of these modules of course in my humble opinion

the A121 filter sounds similar to the yamaha CS-series multimode filters...

Hi

I have heard the A111 is better, but will the A110 still be enough to play some solos with it?
Is that I'm not sure how much I can invest, and if the A110 is enough, I guess I'm better off just getting those at first so that I can get a more complex modular system...

Thanks

Paulo

P.S. - Thanks to the other replies too, I'll have your suggestions registered too :)

The A-110 is absolutely fine. I have two of them myself, although I haven't heard an A-111 for comparison. I think if you didn't have the A-111 to compare it to, you certainly wouldn't have any hesitation about the A-110. It seems completely stable to me (although I tend to slightly detune mine on purpose to thicken the sound), it has a good range, various waveform types, and oscillator sync. It's versatile enough for most requirements (certainly any that I can dream up), and sounds great. Relax. :)

All the best,
Zoe.

Another thing to remember is that there are more than Doepfer making modules in the Eurorack space - there are over 40 different module makers. You will NEVER run out of options for expansion. If the Doepfer filters don't work for you there are plenty of others to choose from that will slot right into your cabinet right next to the Doepfer ones. There are many VCO and controller choices too. The Eurorack ecosystem is huge and still growing. Go to Analogue Haven ( http://www.analoguehaven.com/ ) and look at what is out there. Doepfer in general are less expensive than most of these smaller companies. Doepfer been doing this longer and have a wider product range but When you want to move on there are many of places to go - you rig will never get obsoleted for sure.
