Dark Energy Oscillator

Dark Energy Oscillator

2011-05-03 by bogarts42

I am having a problem with my Dark Energy that is similar to a message that was posted several months earlier, although that message didn't seem to be resolved. My problem is that whenever I use my DE to process an external signal I am unable to completely disable the oscillator. I have it to the point where it is almost totally silent but it is still very faintly audible.
I have the PW turned to 0 and the switch to off just as the manual describes. In the filter section I am noticing that the oscillator sound is most audible when the Frequ. knob is turned around 3. All of the rest of the filter knobs are set to 0. I do notice that if I turn the LFM knob up the sound gets louder, but even at 0 it is still there.
I appreciate any advice about this problem since it does interfere when I am processing sounds that have silent parts in them.

Thanks!

Did you follow up the suggestions about the jumpers
on the pcb?

I can reproduce your problem on my DE, but it's
very quiet compared to the normal functioning of the synth.
 I'd be tempted to put it down to cross
talk in the circuitry, just a bit of the voltage
from the oscillator breaking through into other parts
of the circuit.

On my DE, if I set the filter with
Freq=10,
Res=0,
then the oscillator breakthrough isn't any
louder than the background hiss of the circuit.

Turning the oscillator on to it's low octave helps.

Did you try increasing the amount of external signal?

best regards

Hey Andy,

Thanks for responding. I read the suggestion about the JP6 jumper and checked out the Dark Energy technical information PDF, and I'm afraid that is out of my expertise at this point (the DE is my first foray into anything modular/semi-modular).

The sound is almost never an issue because it is so quiet, but I was just wondering if there was a step I was missing in the process of silencing the VCO. But it sounds like this is just the normal functioning of the synth so I'll work around it. Thanks again for your suggestions!

I do not own a DE, but there will be some breaking through for sure. So
Andy is right to my opinion. The single synth voice chip used in the DE
was never intended to be used without any VCO signal. So there was no
need for the developper of the chip to provide a perfect 1000% signal
rejection.

Thanks, Florian! I'm sure I'll be able to work with it. I just wanted to be certain that I wasn't missing anything.
