Still, I've worked out how to do it, and I have most of the parts ready (I can currently intercept MIDI signals due to another project I'm working on, so I could see what the DOS program sends and try to decipher it), so if I have Dieter's blessing, I'd be happy to give it a go and keep you all posted if I do stumble across anything.
