Hi Richard:
My 2 cents --- I think an image should be dated (and copyrighted) to the
date created or captured; a print should be accompanied by a note (or
certificate of authenticity if it's sold) stating both the date of creation
and the date of printing. On the print, I sign with the copyright date.
OOT: That's a great quote from Ma Ferguson --- where did you come across
that?
Bert

Hi,
I've been in a quandary about whether I should date my prints by the capture
date or the printing date - to give both dates is rather cumbersome,
although I'm signing my exhibition prints on the back, so there's room for
both dates.

Any thoughts?

thanks in advance,
Richard

Hi Richard...

In my case I photograph/print/sell panoramas. I print the date captured (usually to the nearest month), the location, and the print title at the bottom of each print when I print the print. When I proof the print I sign and time stamp it for that moment (right now would be 20060319-0733).

For me this accomplishes a couple of things:
1) The location and date of capture as well as the title are printed right on the print. To me this adds value. How many times are images from the past unidentifiable in terms of location or capture date? If the purchaser does not want the information to show they simply matt over it.
2) It removes me from the limited edition quandary that I had been struggling with. Because each print is signed, dated, and time stamped when I proof the print I can 'print on demand'. And if someday I become so famous that anyone gives a shit the order of my prints can be determined by the date/time stamp.

I know that this breaks rules of the past...but I don't care. And I have not had one complaint. And I feel good about what I am doing.

Thank you all for your input - I may add some more info to the backs of the prints - both the capture and printing date.

(As for the quote, I searched books and the web for quotes and collected about 400 quotes that are appended via a random quote generator.)

Back to printing now ...
