Who developed the idea of using black or grey inks in each of the six ink
cartridge slots? I think it has made using my R220 so easy for black and
white printing. I think it is an idea that could be patented.

Its a little late for that; there's this concept of "prior art"... and a one
year period from release to last date for patent application, which has
definately expired.

Given the practice of using several greys in claire obscure
intaglio, the use of several grey inks in Chromolithography
printing since Senefelder there shouldn't be reason to grant a
patent.

Given the total weirdness of today's USA patent system you
probably can get seven patents for seven varieties of quad
printing, starting with BO printing with one head. Prior art
including detailed descriptions in mailing lists like this
isn't what the US patent office takes in consideration. What
it actually controls is unknown to mankind.
