X-Rite 810 Reflection Plaque

X-Rite 810 Reflection Plaque

2006-01-21 by Tom Husband

Does the reflection plaque (X-Rite #302-12) degrade over time? I read
where you should replace it every 18 month but at $71 it's bit steep.
It's a ceramic coating and I would think it would last quite a while.

I get readings of 0.110 - 0.140 in the 0% patch for HPR and Dourian
Art with Eboni and 0.140 on Epson Premium Luster with PKN ink. I'm
questioning my readings and have calibrated the 810 using a new
transmission film (X-Rite #810-68) but the plaque is about 10 years
old. Should I pop for a new one? Are there cheaper ones around?

Could the lamp be suspect too?

Thanks,

Tom

I would say that the lamp would degrade before the cal. plaque. That
said, I have no idea if the ceramic portion of the cal. will degrade,
it should be pretty stable, but who really knows. It might be worth
sending your machine back to Xrite for a check up and to have the
lamp replaced.

Right. I sent X-Rite an email to see if they still service the unit. Their
site says it's discontinued.

We'll see.

Thanks,
Tom

They do service discontinued units. My older model DTP41 cost $500+ to be brought up to spec. but, it wasn't in working condition. Might be cheaper for a new bulb and palque.

As of about a month ago, the price to rebuild a DTP41 and add the UV
filter is now about $750. I decided to put off buying the used DTP41
at that time since it would have been almost $2000 after the purchase
and rebuild. For that much a series 2 machine would have made more
sense.

I got lucky and got mine on ebay for under $200. I also got a Spectrolino for $425 so it was worth the rebuild.

Thanks Walt. Glad to hear they still service the old stuff. I guess
I could just buy a new plaque and bulb but it would be nice to have
them go over everything.

One more thing. As a base line what should D-max be for just paper, say,
HPR? I get 0.110 and think it's too high. I just calibrated the 810 a
month ago.

Thanks again,

Tom

I think you mean D-min ie. paper base & I get 0.04-0.05 so yes, yours is
a bit out.
