The best black in with UC?

The best black in with UC?

2006-01-17 by tflyfish2002

I have been away from B/W printing for a while, two years I think!
The reason I gave up was the Cone inks that I used all turned green,
leaving me with a lot of useless prints which I still have a few of
and a bad taste in my mouth.
I would like to "Bite the Bullet" and restart with my 2200 and either
Imageprint or QTR. The question is what ink to use? I would like to
stay with the Epson inks for all but the black.
What would you recommend to use in it's place? I am looking for a bit
more Dmax than the Epson mk black. I am no stranger to refilling
cartridges.

Thanks,

Barry

MIS Eboni will give you better black (Dmax ~1.70) then Epson MK (Dmax
~1.63) with the Hanhnemuhle line of papers. The OEM MK is just fine (if
quite a bit warmer) on Epson papers (EEM, VFA Dmax ~1.67 to 1.70).

Welcome back.

People have reported 1.83 on Epson Velvet Fine Art here with Epson MK. I
agree with Shilesh, Epson ink performs the best on Epson papers and MIS
Eboni performs the best on third party papers, generally speaking. If
InkVillage posts reasonable longevity tests for the Nanochromes they will
then be worth considering. I've measured 2.0 on HPR308.

Steve,

Call me crazy - but I just got a 2400 and exchanged the black ink to
NanoChrome K. My idea is to make b/w prints with QTR, but using the
OEM K3 LK, LLK, LM, and LC to fine-tune the tone.

On HPR 308 (I have 3 year old paper), I get Dmax of 1.8 after 2 hours
dry-down, at the 85% patch using QTR "calibration" mode. Miles away
from 2.0 you are getting with your 2100.

My numbers, it seems are consistently lower. Perhaps it is the
densitometer I am using. Would it be too much to ask you to post me a
1 x 1 inch Dmax patch on HPR? You could send it on regular size
envelop.

I limit K at 45% and boost 50% (2880dpi). Let them dry overnight - not just
2 hours. Happy to send you a patch but try that first. You may be laying
down too much ink.

Print 1% patches from 80 to 90% to refine your Dmax ink limit. Also print
patches using the Epson driver for comparison.
As Steve indicated, Dmax takes at least overnight to settle, maybe longer.

Barry,

Do you want to stick to matte papers, or might you be interested in
glossy and semi-gloss as well? Are you only printing B&W with your
2200? If you are printing B&W only you could use Eboni with the Epson
K3 PK, LK and LLK, a couple of toner inks and a gloss top coat. Quite
versatile.

Just a thought.
Best,
Helen

Helen,

Thank you and others for your replies. I need to print both B/W as
well as color on my 2200. For B/W I anticipate using matte papers
only, for color both matt and Epson Premium Luster.
I have access to Imageprint 5.6 which seems to be very versatile, but
I am not sure for B/W. I am thinking that QTR might be a better way to go.

Thanks

Barry
