RE: softproofing QTR on PC/Windows

RE: softproofing QTR on PC/Windows

2005-03-04 by Diane Fields

I hope I'm not being too obtuse, but I've read through the directions on the
QTR site for softproofing (double clicking on the 'install softproof'
command does not appear to be valid in Win--I had never heard of it before,
but I tried it anyhow) and read Carl Schofield's directions for
softproofing. AFAIK, in the Windows version of PS, I have always
softproofed by choosing an ICC profile from proof setup and of course, the
'proof' files in Carl's folder are not ICC profiles that can be used in
Windows (I stand to be corrected, but I've never seen files like this).

I was hoping that I could also use Carl's blending action but this wouldn't
be possible unless I have actual ICC profiles.

I have installed the ICC profiles from the QTR site and can convert to
gray-lab and then to gray matte or gray photo for output, but---is there any
way to softproof for QTR in Windows?

Thanks once again,
Diane

I just found the 'proof' folder and am going to copy the 'proof'
files to that and see--live and learn LOL. Yes, that works after
closing and reopening PSCS. However, because I don't have actual ICC
profiles, I'm unable to use Carl's blending action it appears.

Do your soft proof in the normal way (a la colour in PS) but select either
QTR Gray Photo or QTR Gray Matte paper depending on what you are using. A
while ago there was a long debate about how tonal compression was handled by
QTR (and other RIPs such as IJC/OPM). In essence it was done poorly and on
a straight line basis causing a whole perceptual tone shift in the image.
Roy found a way to design ICC profiles to meet the tonal range we print to -
a general one for each of matte paper and photo paper. By using the
Perceptual colour engine to convert the image to the print space we get a
much better fitting of the image into the compressed print space. Since ICC
profiles are used to do the conversion we can do a soft proof in the
conventional manner with these. They do NOT soft proof for hue (warm or
cold etc) but provide an accurate soft proof of luminance. In essence, if
you are not worried about checking hue then these offer a much simpler way
of soft proofing. I HIGHLY recommend using the new workflow. If you want to
soft proof for hue then you will need to create your own soft proof ICC
profiles and create soft proofs in PS in the normal fashion.

Yes or if you want to see a soft proof before committing by conversion to
the print space then just set up a PS soft proof with the selected print
space and perceptual intent.

Carl's blending action was designed as a means of soft proofing hue under
the old workflow (pre use of perceptual intent to map from workspace to
print space). If you want to soft proof hue you will need to make your own
soft proof ICC files from output generated with the new workflow. Unless I
am mistaken, Carl has not updated these hue proofs for the new workflow.
(The proofs were intended primarily to preview the workspace to print space
mapping rather than hue. Now that mapping process has been significantly
improved and can be soft proofed from the actual ICC profiles used (QTR Gray
Photo/Matte Paper) in the perceptual conversion process.)

Thanks Steve. I just learned that through printing from one where I used the 'proof' with color--and then using the converted gray-lab to gray-matte tiff to print to the same hue in QTR. I agree--this is not the way to go.

I appreciate your help. I'm really happy overall with QTR--just have to work out my own workflow.

Yes, I understood that from the very good information from Lou I found on a search yesterday. Thanks for reiterating it. I found (see a post just made) where I found the 'proof' files not good for my uses for QTR.

Look in the "icc" folder of the QTR installation. The ICC files are all
there.

If anyone would care to document the soft proofing process for QTR for
Windows and send it to me off list, I will add it to the QTR help.
