B&W with C86 and MIS inks - unattractive sheen - advice?

B&W with C86 and MIS inks - unattractive sheen - advice?

2005-01-11 by yanceyiv

Hi all,

I just got the UT inks for the C86 today and printed my first few
test prints. The output was very nice and I am impressed. When
looking at them under a light, from most angles they look great.
However, there seems to be one spot when tilting where there is an
unsightly sheen. I am not sure exactly what to call it, but it looks
like there may be too much ink laid down or that it looks flat from
that particular angle (appx 45 deg to light). I printed the same
print on the 2200 with the Epson UC inks and QTR and only have ever
so slight a similar sheen - almost imperceptable.

Specifics are: Kirkland Pro Glossy paper, MIS EZN inkset, printed
following Paul's C86EZ-UT readme instructions as close as possible,
from Photoshop CS, print with preview.

Does this sound like something I can correct or is it a
characteristic of the inkjet print? Again, when viewed from all
other angles, the print looks really nice.

Thanks,
Bill

It's bronzing.

I haven't had the problem when the print's hanging on a wall. Only
when I've held the print at some unusual angle have I noticed the
bronzing.

Paul and others here use Premier Art Shield to coat the print and
reduce (and in some cases, eliminate)bronzing and to protect the
print.

I haven't used PA Shield (yet).

Maybe you should hang a print on a wall and look at it from different
angles and see what you think. It might not be that big a deal.

Scott if I missed it what do you think of the Kirkland paper have you
tried any yet?

I have burned up about 40 sheets and am now (after returning the
flawed box) quite happy with the results on my Canon i960 printing color)

I'm still a couple of weeks away from being able to afford the MIS
inks for B&W printing on my Epson so that will have to wait. But I
read some of the guys are making out pretty well with the cheap paper.

I talked to a local print shop who said they would cut 125 sheets of
8.5X11 paper into perfect 4X6 sixe for about $5.00 and do it while I
wait. I figure for proof and snap shot stuff under 7 cents a 4X6 is
pretty cheap for this quality.

I really wish they would come out with a 13X19 sixe so I could cut 8.5
X 13's from it as the largest display prints I make are full frame
8X12's sure would be nice. But then I don't make very many so the
Epson glossy will do.

Gonna try out some Ilford Classic Pearl as well.

Mark,

I received my bulk ink and supplies yesterday. I didn't have time to
get to ostco as they are 35 miles away from me. I plan tomget out
today, weather permitting (a little frozen rain now!).

I went with PK and a bottle of warm. The prints are too warm for my
taste. So, I ordered a bottle of neutral and will use that in slots C
and M (leaving the warm in the Y position), that should give me the
slight warmth I'm loooking for.

Going from CFS Warm to Neutral WAS Kirkland papers revisited

2005-01-11 by Daniel Ridings

Scott,

You speak of bottles ... are you switching from warm to neutral in slots
of a CFS system? Or are you refilling?

REfilling.

I'm going to use the "N" in the C and M positions.

I'm a portrait photographer and I find the warm set to be too warm
for skintones. I guess I'm looking for just a little warmth.

Re: B&W with C86 and MIS inks - unattractive sheen - advice?

2005-01-11 by yanceyiv

Thanks Scott

I wondered if the spray would help after I posted. Will give it a
try if I can find it locally. I have seen Krylon and other spray
protectants at places like Michaels but not Premier Art Sheield. No
large photo shops here.

Thanks
Bill

PremierArt Print Shield is the best spray I've used. MIS has it at
http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/new_prod.html and it's also
available at www.ITSupplies.com .

The Costco Kirkland Pro Glossy paper is about the best combination of dmax,
price, and almost no bronzing. It can also be bought mail order -- even by
non-members. Letter-size is all that is available.

Epson Glossy Photo Paper is artifact free and reasonably cheap and
available. Its dmax is less. It too is letter size only. Epson had some
similar papers in larger sizes, but most have been discontinued.

Epson Premium Semimatte is relatively good with respect to bronzing. It is
available only in rolls. It's what I use for large display with no glazing
-- very impressive dynamic range. I do spray it.

Matte papers under glass are the easiest way to get artifact-free B&W. An
EEM print in an inexpensive acrylic frame gets a gloss from the acrylic and
looks just like a silver print in such a frame.

Mark,

Just got home from Costco and made a print.

It looks great. Can't beat the price. I bought a membership and 5
boxes of Kirkland!

I'm going to make more prints in a few minutes.

So I joined the Kirkland revolution - with BO!

2005-01-12 by hill14701

I had a relative purchase a box - amazing stuff. I've been using it with my ancient 860
running BO with Epson's original (dye) black. The tone is beautiful - even though the
prints will not be as long lived as the pigment counterparts. The tone and texture is very
similar, yet distinct from my Ilford FB prints.

My question is this - is anyone using Kirkland Glossy with MIS Photo Black in a Black Only
capacity? I'm interested in your thoughts on print tone as well as print durability (scuffing,
etc.) Mostly I am interested in any form of bronzing when using BO.

I've tried the paper with UT-FSN with the eboni channel removed in curves, but am not
pleased with the bronzing - and I have no desire to spray. That being said, the print color
is delightful with FSN and would highly reccomend this ink/paper combination for anyone
who sprays.

Thanks for any input,

Don
