Everything that you mention wanting to do is no different for B&W than it is for color. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "joshscapes" <joshrandall@j...> wrote:

It's a good question....what is a good Photoshop book for photographers. Fact is only 20% of the contents of most of the books I have looked at are useable by most people on this forum. The other 80% are "special effects" most here would seldom use and more appropriate for a graphics artist. What has the greatest percentage written for a true digital darkroom user, particularly for black and white - something that delves more into more than just the basic digital equivalents of silver darkroom techniques? George DeWolfe has a CD on workflow that looks pretty interesting. I assume it has a little more than what he excerpts in Camera Arts. Has anyone bought it? --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Scott Graham" <gebilwil@n...> wrote: > > Everything that you mention wanting to do is no different for B&W than it is for color. > > --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "joshscapes" <joshrandall@j...> > wrote: > > > > Hello all, > > > > Just curious if anyone know where I could obtain a good book on > > photoshop for b&w. If you're starting with color images, as from a digicam, then it's important to know something about the color manipulation tools, because it's important to learn how to exploit the color for getting the best detail and contrast in the B&W conversion. However, there are some things, like really brutal curve adjustments, that work wonders on B&W images but that would be disastrous in color. So there is certainly room for someone to write at least a long article, if not a short book, on using PS specifically for B&W. Until someone does, the archives of this list are probably one of the best resources, even if painful to search. -- Ciao, Paul D. DeRocco Paul mailto:pderocco@...

I am working with b&w negatives that are scanned, then "worked on" in photoshop, then sent to the inkjet for printing. My intent is to create good crisp b&w images that are close to the same images that I would produce with a wet darkroom. Josh

I was just in Books a million this evening and noticed they had a book called "Digital black and white photography". I browsed through it and it seems like something worth purchasing. I too have been waiting for someone to come out with a book addressing digital black and white photography being that is the majority of my work. The book has some techniques I was familiar with as well as some that I was not. It sells for about 25 bucks but I saw it on amazon.com for about 17 bucks. Amazon also has another book geared toward black and white digital photography called darkroom to digital. If you buy the two together, you get a price break $36.89. I will probably order them next week sometime. Heres the link to the book on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/ detail/-/1592004725/ref%3Dpd%5Fsl%5Faw%5Falx-jeb-9-1%5Fbook%5F6481858%5F2/ 104-7693339-1213563 --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "thm29205" <thm@b...> wrote:

Josh, This is not a book, but my web site has an in-depth explanation of Photoshop's Hue/Saturation, Levels and Curves adjustments. I use Levels and Curves a lot to darken/lighten/increase-decrease contrast in an image. There is a section on the web site that discusses converting color to B&W, but if you use B&W film, then the section would probably be irrelevant. I think Photoshop's help gives a fairly good explanation of layer masks. In Photoshop, click Help > Photoshop Help, then click the Search menu and search for layer masks. Try reading the topic titled Creating and Editing Layer Masks. Not sure the topic explains it, but one of the things I do a lot is to Alt-click the layer mask to display the mask in the document window. This shows you exactly what the mask has in it. Alt-click the mask again to restore the image display. Thomas www.zuberphotographics.com

Point taken Paul. I have seen some wonderful results with negatives that I have tried to print in the darkroom but got frustrated with them. Josh

Thanks Marcus. Very helpful. I also have seen that George Schaub is coming out with a new book on b&w digital photography using photoshop. It is not being published however until may 2005. Josh

Hello all, A while ago I asked whether anyone has found a useful book about using photoshop specifically for b&w images. Well, since then I have found, not a book, but a wonderful CD put out by RH Designs that takes you step by step through image manipulation in photoshop. What I love about it is the fact that it relates the image tools to the darkroom and focuses on producing traditional b&w prints. It is the most comprehensive and easy to understand information I have found yet on the subject (and I have been buying and reading everything on the subject for the past 4 months). Anyhow, if you are just getting started and need some clarity for how you can optimize photoshop for your b&w images, check out this cd. I have included a link below: http://www.rhdigital.co.uk/html/b_w_workshop_cd.html Josh p.s. I have no links to this company at all. This is just my opinion. If you do happen to order the cd, watch out for the currency conversion. It comes from the U.K. and ends up costing about $50.00 for us U.S. folks.
