What's the difference between the 3 MIS quad and hextone inksets?

Jerry,

To the best of my knowledge:

The Variable Mix has the toner in the M and m positions to produce
variable tone.

The Full Spectrum is the "Piezo Clone" that closely matches the Piezo
ink set in tone and color.

The original set uses the inks in different dilutions and in
different positions in the cartridges. I believe it is reported to be
redder but I have not seen an example of this ink set myself.

Does this mean that I can buy the Full Spectrum ink and use it with my
PiezoBW software and profiles successfully? Does it require a lot of
tweaking? I just started following this thread, so forgive me til I get up
to speed...

Yes, at least for my 1280. See my report on the other current thread.

I did a custom dot gain which so far has worked well without making
adjusts for each image

One curve tweaking in the color adjustement (custom greyscale)
of PS 601 for each paper to match the monitor priview with your
print (use the step wedge for baseline adjustement ans a fine
print for minor corrections). - Sorry don“t know the Am/Engl..
terms exactly, my PS is German.
