1280 / CFS nightmare

1280 / CFS nightmare

2004-01-22 by Harry Saddler

I just switched my 1280 from MIS VM to MIS UT-2/Eboni, using a new,
prefilled set of MIS CFS carts & tubes. I cannot get clean nozzle
checks. I did windex-on-pad, windex-under-head,
windex-nozzle-injection, MIS's de-foaming procedure, several cycles of
3 cleaning passes followed by three purge prints. For my labors, one
color is now not printing at all, and the black cart just squirts ink
on the edge of the page. I must be doing SOMETHING wrong!?

Any problems in a system with a CFS requires you first substitue
original Epson carts to determine if you have a nozzle problem or cart
problem. Otherwise you'll be chasing a nozzle problem when you really
have a cart problem. Your's sounds like it could be a cart problem but
you can tell for sure if it prints fine with Epson carts. Call MIS and
you'll eventually ending up talking to Bob, the owner. He'll probably
tell you to disconnect the cart from the tube, suck out all the ink
from the bottom and bottom refill with exactly 9cc's of ink (for a
1280 cart), let sit for a few hours then try it. CFS carts need the
right amount of air in them. I love my MIS CFS but they can be a bit
quirky to set up.

Since my original post, I went to MIS' site and followed the
instructions for introducing an "air break" into the carts. Suddenly,
two problematic colors started printing fine. But two still have lines
(indicating a clog, probably) and one doesn't appear at all. I'm
letting it rest, and if it's still NFG, I'm going to try to flush out
the offending nozzles by injecting Windex, then doing the de-foaming &
air-break routine again. Then I'm going to take an icepick to the
nozzles. Ok, maybe not that last step...

I did put Epson carts in to try to get things back to an unclogged
state, but they wouldn't unclog, so I took 'em out and did the
Windex-inject trick. But then I didn't put the Epson carts back in,
cause I figured they're unsealed and I don't know what effect that has.

Harry, use only the Epson carts till you've got the nozzle clog
problems solved. That way you know you have good carts. I find the
Epson ink to be best at unclogging nozzles. Don't hesitate to reuse
them as they have poppet valves which make them reusable.

BTW, Bob at MIS says their $5 Chinese "el cheapo" color carts work
like the Epson ones in this regard. I have some but have not tried to
use them for this yet.

[Digital BW] Re: 1280 / CFS nightmare

2004-01-23 by Scott Graham

I've found that I can keep Epson cartridges (for the 1200) a fairly long time and using
them to test the printer. I put the MIS steel plugs in them after I am done using them
on the MIS carts.

Good Luck

When changing ink types it is always good to run some cleaning cartridges first, that is before introducing the new ink to the print heads. This helps prevent any reactions between the inks. MIS carries a new cleaning solution that seems to work much better then the windex, the product is listed at the bottom of the accessory web page its called MIS-fluid. Soaking the park pad and letting the heads sit in it allows the fluid to wick up into the print heads.

I finally contacted MIS, and they immediately sent me a new prefilled
cart & tube set, which solved the problem. Finally! They're examining
the old one to find out what the problem was, presumably to keep it
from happening again.

Thanks, everyone at MIS -- excellent customer service!
