Is Epson dead?

Is Epson dead?

2003-03-16 by André Vallejo

On the new Canon i9000...
4800x1200 ,13x19 inches, 4 picoliters variable-size droplet,can swap heads
for BW and color printing(and rinsing),new Piezo inks&profiles for it... Are
the current Epson printers close to their final hour for us?

A lot has been said about the Canon printers lately. It will be fun
(?) to see how they compare to Epsons in real world setting with the
b&w inksets

Fine white horizontal lines across the prints, printer head touching
the heavier paper, etc may not be the exclusive domain of Epson
printers.

Cheers,
Andre

I was really excited about the swappable print-heads when I saw the
Canon at Piezography's booth at PMA a few weeks ago too. Sounds like
a great solution - black and white AND color from the same printer!!

Talk to Canon and/or anyone who's tried it though (for a long period
of time anyway) and you'll discover uncorrectable alignment problems,
tons of banding and a voided warranty.

Epson dead - No Way!!

This is obviously a point of concern for those who may be thinking of the
dual printhead approach for Canon printers (I'm one, though probably with
Lyson Small Gamut inks when they become available in bulk for the Canon
9000) but I'm curious as to the source of the trouble reports. It was my
impression that Canon has only been selling the printhead separately for a
month or two. Has someone found the problems you describe in just that
short period?

I've removed my (only) printhead several times in the 8 months I've had the
printer, to rinse it out under a faucet in an effort to clear persistent
clogs. I never had a problem with banding or alignment after it was
returned to the printer carriage and put through several cleaning cycles to
refill the heads with ink. Is there some concern that the printheads
available as "spares" from Canon somehow don't meet the same specs as
"original equipment" and so somehow mess up the printer mechanism? I'm
having a hard time imagining how this would happen, mechanically.

Any details would be appreciated. I'm hoping to stick with the Canon and
dual printheads for B&W and color printing, largely for its much faster
printing times compared to the Epsons. But if for some reason the two
heads approach doesn't really work reliably, I'll have to rethink my strategy.

Cheers,
Kip

I've had an S9000 for over a year and have had NO problems with head alignment etc. It is a joy to clean compared to my Epsons and I am chomping at the bit to use it for B&W when Jon Cone finally gets pigmented inks for it on the market.

Question: are the Lyson small gamut inks available in cartridges for the Canon?

[Digital BW] Re: Lyson SG for Canon (was Is Epson dead?)

2003-03-29 by Kip Babington

Yes, Roger, the Small Gamuts have been available in Canon 9000 cartridges
for a month or two, and they produce very nice images. They're just too
expensive for me to use on a regular basis, as I do about 1500 8x10 size
prints a year, mostly at Christmas.

I've been reloading cartridges with Inkjet Goodies color inks for a few
months, and have had enough success to put up with the fact that I can't
swap in a full cartridge without having to do nozzle checks and cleaning
cycles, something I NEVER have had to do with Canon brand ink. But the
price differential is so dramatic that I put up with the hassle.

Lyson Small Gamut inks have been available in bulk for Epson printers for
some time, and I'm assuming the prices for Canon printers will be
similar. If my assumption proves out, the saving will be about 80%
compared to filled cartridge prices (i.e., 80% less for a home filled cart
than a factory filled one.)

I'm hoping.

Cheers,
Kip
